WE ARE OKAY by Nina LaCour
Marin, an orphan, leaves California for New York and her freshman year of college, cutting off communication with everyone there including her best friend Mabel, but when Mabel flies out to visit, the source of Marin's anxiety and the reason she left home so suddenly become clear. The non-sequential way this story is told is what gives it its tension,
which wouldn't really exist if told in a linear way. But the story is still a nice one, Mabel is a great best friend,
and Marin's melancholy is palpable. First love, first loss, and the true meaning of family are addressed in this contemporary novel. (Dutton, 2017)
