WHAT WE LEFT BEHIND by Robin Talley
As soon as they meet in high school, Toni and Gretchen fall in love and become the perfect couple; they expect to be together through college, too, until the distance between NYC and Boston feels like more than a train ride, and they both gain new identities and ideas of themselves. In their dual first-person POVs, both Toni and Gretchen feel like real people with real questions, feelings, and friends. Toni's struggles to give Toni a gender label that fits, and Gretchen's struggles to understand what this means while being supportive, are both heartbreaking and heartwarming at times. A lovely romance that many teens can relate to if they have gone to a college away from their significant other after a high school relationship. (Harlequin Teen, 2015)
