Dear Festividder,

Thank you for signing up for Festivids! And thank you for choosing one of these great sources to vid. (Or more. Don't limit yourself on my behalf.)

(ETA! If anyone feels like making me a gift, see the bottom of this post for an addition.)

After submitting requested fandoms, I realized there were two telltale themes involved, both of which are huge narrative kinks for me.

Competence

Archer. Can't put into words how wack-a-doodle this show is, in a mind-blowingly coherent way. The characters are insane, but quite competent in what they do, whether that's their actual job or running a railroad or racing drift cars. You could make a fabulous Lord King Bad vid to this source.

The West Wing. SO MANY AWESOME WOMEN. Vid them for me. I have a special place in my heart for Stockard Channing but pretty much every woman on this show was amazing.

Identity / Persona / Pretending / Role-play / Acting acting / Inner self and outer perception / Hiding who you are / Discovering who you are by pretending to be someone else

Dead Poets Society. The kids are more interesting than the adults, and I'm not particularly interested in the "pursuing the girl" subplot. Would be totally open to a crossover vid with actors' other works. For an extreme challenge: if you could make a humor vid to this source, you would be Supreme Ruler of the Internet and All Media.

Threesome. Eddy POV, please. Alex and Stuart are both great, but Eddy's the one I identify with. I like the physical touching in the movie, and the goofing around. Intercut that with the serious inner turmoil Eddy goes through, and you might just have a winner.

The Colbert Report. Stephen Colbert is a very kinky man. Whether he knows it or not.

Overboard. Do you love this movie? Does it make you squeal with delight? YOU, ME, AND REESE WITHERSPOON! (Did you see her shout-out to the movie at the Oscars? Awesome!) This movie is cute and sweet and funny and adorable! And, it's got major, disturbing consent issues AND it acknowledges that. A straight-up Dean/Annie romance vid wouldn't work for me, nor would an "excusing Dean" vid. But there are still so many possibilities for chosen-family or who-am-I stories to tell.

Ocean's movies (2000s' version). SLASH. Slash, slash, slashity-slash-slash. A shiny, slick, suavely dressed orgy of gay testosterone and role-playing is what I got out of these movies. Of course, Danny/Rusty. And Danny/Rusty/Linus (don't think I don't know what you were doing, Matt Damon, with your little-boy horizontal stripes and references back to daddy and mom). Those go without saying. But Virgil/Turk! And Frank! Basher/Livingston, with their exceptional fine motor skills. And Reuben flopping around under his bathrobe, curls peeking out. And Yen -- you can't tell me that flexibility didn't come in very handy at some point. I wouldn't kick Tess/Isabel out of bed for eating crackers, either.

Scarecrow & Mrs King. I haven't seen the TV show in ages but I adored it when it was on television. Secrets, and role-playing, and home, and domestic, and pretend couple, and pretend-turned-real couple, and pretend-turned-real-couple-pretending-not-to-be-a-couple. YAY! All kinds of fun.

ETA: Since this letter was written in October, my new shiny-shiny is Martin Freeman. A multi-source vid (including interviews, etc.) of him would be dreamy, except no hobbit feet, if you don't mind. Please do include him playing with his beads from this skit from Bruiser. TYVM.

Music: I personally enjoy geek rock (They Might Be Giants, Dead Milkmen, Weezer, BNL, Devo, Paul and Storm, Jonathan Coulton) but am certainly open to other genres. I like vids that tell a story (or make a point, or tell a joke, or some combination thereof), and songs that tell a story lend themselves pretty well to that.

Final Word of Advice: Cut the song shorter to fit the vid you're making rather than stretching the vid to fit the song. "That vid would've been great if it'd been 30 seconds shorter" is such a sad thing for vid-watcher to have to think. Make your vid and roll credits!
