A few years ago, I was reading about violet perfume and it's unique qualities. True violet perfume has the ability to fade in and out of perception creating a weird scent based illusion. I decided I had to have some. Unfortunately, true violet perfume is exorbitantly expensive. The violet perfumes that I found in stores were disgusting powder based scents that were reminiscent of bingo halls. I thought I'd never find a decent violet perfume and then
g33kgrrl was writing about BPAL that has samples that can be bought. Success.
Here's from my first batch:
Absinthe
wormwood essence, light mints, cardamom, anise, hyssop, and the barest hint of lemon
I was fairly indifferent to it. It smelled herbally and lemony but in a bland manner.
Blood
Essence of dragon's blood resin, thickened with myrrh and cherry, with a trickle of clove.
It faintly smelled like dragon's blood incense but it faded fairly quickly.
MORGAUSE
A bouquet of five night-blooming flowers deepened by dusky violet, purple fruits and the barest breath of medieval incenses.
The imp smelled like old lady perfume which should have been my first hint. It smells like astringent on me.
PLUNDER
tea leaf, cassia, cinnamon bark, clove, allspice, sandalwood, tobacco, peppercorn, and nutmeg
I smelled allspice, cinnamon and clove. I made a coworker smell it, told him the name and then shouted "Booty!".
ULTRAVIOLET
Lush violet and neroli spiked hard with eucalyptus and a sliver of mint.
Eucalyptus with a bit of violet. I was not a fan. I liked several of the other violet perfumes much more.
WRATH
dragon's blood spiked with black pepper, clove, and cinnamon
It smells like powder on me. I guess wrath is a big vat of talcum.
MARIE
A blend of sinuous violet and elegant tea rose
It mostly smells like tea rose with a bit of violet in the back. This one is very strong and I could smell it all day. I liked it; I felt regal wearing it.
SYBARIS
Bright violet with sweet clove, Mediterranean incense notes and tonka bean.
It smells like violets to me. I didn't really smell any of the other notes at the time. I liked it.
ERIS
wet fruits and sharp mimosa with Martial spices and a deceptive flash of floral
It smelled like someone had chucked some fruit into a flower basket. The smell was nice enough, but does not necessitate buying a bottle.
PERSEPHONE
Pomegranate and rose.
I smelled mostly rose. I wanted to smell more pomegranate.
VIOLET RAY
White mint, purple musk, violet, lilac, ylang ylang, lavender moss, and sandalwood
Violet, sandalwood with a tinge of mint. It was okay but it smelled very sharp.
BRUISED VIOLET
This one smelled very astringent and sharply of violet. It faded very quickly to a very light violet.
casanova
A rakish blend of leather, anise, lavender, bergamot and amber with tonka, lemon peel and lusty patchouli.
This was one of the frimps as I would not have ordered anything with patchouli on the list. *Sidenote*when I think of patchouli, I think of unwashed hippie... well that is now in the past*End Sidenote* This was too manly for me to think about wearing, but I like smelling the frimp. The only thing that I can think about is that it smells very fuckable.
wanton
Palmarosa, red sandalwood, attar of rose, patchouli.
In the imp, it smelled like sharpie, old lady perfume and an old lady garden. As you can see, I have a very refined nose. I almost didn't try it on as I was worried I would smell like I had been huffing a sharpie in florist shop. On me, it lost all sharpie smell and only smelled like rose and it faded quickly at that, too.
defututa
Olive blossom, honey, smoky vanilla, cinnamon, jasmine, sandalwood, and champaca flower.
It smells like a sweet musk. I'm fairly indifferent to it.
omen
oakmoss, juniper berry, myrrh and patchouli.
Ack. I opened the frimp and it smelled like someone had opened a modly basement with a fruit cellar. I couldn't even bribe myself to try this one. It sits unused in the box. If anyone needs to convert a fresh smelling room into a foul one, let me know.
