OMFG!!
It's a great car. I drove it. It purrs like a kitten at idle and hums like a... hummingbird? when it's moving. I wouldn't say it roars, but it's certainly fun to drive! Power everything - windows, locks, steering, moonroof, cruise control... Plus it's pretty sweet in itself. The shifter (I only drive manual, btw) is mounted almost on the center dash console... Which is cool, because it's easier to reach when reclined slightly. 1st, 3rd and 5th are physically "up" rather than forward like most cars, so it's less of a reach. Which is awesome, because I constantly find myself leaning forward when I'm driving, which is not good on my back. The headrests are cool, though not adjustable, but they have holes, so there's somewhere for my ponytail to go. :) It's also got all the sporty fun looking stuff, like a dual exhaust pipe and almost-honeycomb grille (like the VW GTI, of course). It's 2-door but it has a big back seat - and it's not like a have many passengers anyway (though I will likely insist on driving everywhere myself now!!!). The back seats fold completely flat, too, so if I ever do need to haul a lot of shit I can. Especially now that I've figured out how to disconnect my sub at a moment's notice (and yes, I WILL be putting my sub and amp into the new car!! I may just leave the factory speakers, depending on how they pan out).
My Escort has ZERO trade-in value. KBB values it at $350, but since I'll be taking back my head unit and all speakers (all of which were aftermarket), it'll be worthless. Nobody's going to buy a car with no speakers or stereo, right? So I'm going to donate it. It's actually not in TOO bad condition, though. It has brand new tires and brakes/rotors, and it has relatively new struts. The CV joints need replacing, though, and I think it *might* need a new clutch, but I haven't a clue, really. The fact is that in order to get it into sellable condition I'd have to spend more money than I'd ever, EVER make on it. Not worth it. I'm kindof sad to see it go after these two long years, but it's had a good run. I didn't even do that much to it, wear-wise. It was at 119k miles when I got it in 07 and it now has 143k miles on it. I only put 24k miles on it in 2 years, which is about average miles-per-year. It's those first 119k that did it.
I don't really mind, though. I have no hard feelings. I never gave her a name, except "The Escort", but she did me well. Yes, the repair bills were insane, but she never left me stranded (except when I blew a tire and had to call AAA, but that was my fault for letting the tires get that bad!)... (and that time I blew a freeze plug and lost all my coolant in the middle of the summer, but I managed to hobble to Pep Boys and then to the dealership and got a ride from there from a friend - so not really stranded, per se). Yea, I guess it's a lot. But nothing I couldn't handle. She held up pretty well to all my beating. She took me from VA to Baltimore to PA. And I certainly drove the hell out of her. Sure, she's got some years left, but I think it's time to put her into retirement... or whatever they do with cars when you donate them.
I'm actually a wee bit glad that I can't trade her in. It's going to feel really good to donate her to charity - to someone who needs her more than I.
Now... to figure out WHO to donate her to... :-p
By the way, as much as I want to resist the idea of naming a car (especially after what happened to Penelope), I really want to name my new car Osiris. It definitely seems like a boy car. And I think Osiris might be fitting. A good match to my D&D character, Isis (dorky, I know!!).
