I thought I'd share. This is a rough estimate, but considering the fact that the rest of the city is flooded with people trying to get to the Mall, just take a few minutes to think about the implications of these numbers.

"From Grant Statue to Lincoln Memorial, the Mall covers 309.2 acres (1,251,000 m²)."

I believe this is the area allotted to the unticketed masses. I would venture to assume that the space between the Grant statue to the Capitol steps would be reserved for ticketed attendees.

If you allow for 0.5m x 0.5m per person (0.25m^2), that would calculate to about 5,004,000 people. And that's only on the National Mall.

"In 2008, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the District's population at 591,833 residents"

That's almost an 850% increase in the population of Washington, D.C. Like I said, that's no doubt a vast underestimate.
