Things have been a little crazy the last few weeks and I have had trouble finding time to read the journals on my f-list, much less write anything. The way Andong works is that half the teachers teach summer camps in July and the other half teach in August. The camps are usually all kinds from young kids to Korean English teachers to summer classes ( Read more... )

English is ridiculously difficult, and to make things even harder, we have to have slang that makes everything even more confusing. Gah.

My mom still doesn't understand most grammar...for instance, she'll say "I am so boring" instead of "I am so bored". Hehe.

Actually I don't think that English is exceptionally difficult. However, most Koreans usually only study grammar and memorize words but avoid using it. They are obsessed with always being perfectly correct instead of just speaking and, ironically it makes their English worse. They also insist the Korean is the most difficult language (it isn't THAT difficult) and that only Koreans can speak it correctly (more arrogant bullshit.) I just don't buy arguments about some languages being easy and others being hard because they all take years to master and whether a language is hard or not just does not seem relevant to learning it ( ... )

"It is ironic that I need to get a background check to teach at the university because not only is the idea of sex with children totally repellent to me, the idea of just teaching them English is, to my mind, not that much of an improvement"

THANK YOU.

Fucking kids. On Thursday my effing 1st graders weren't doing their work, which was simple. My devil child who I complain about all the time and another kid were the worst in not doing it. I told them no break if they didn't do their work. Well, 1/2 way into the break time (the other kids were outside playing, while these two were still inside) they just bolted for the door and ran out! Then they went to the Korean teacher and complained about me. Luckily, the Korean teachers knows they are trouble and didn't bother me too much (plus I think he saw the murder in my face...). Gah.

Anyway, one more week then you get a week off, then back to not-teaching children!

We don't have Korean teachers to so I am in complete control ("Yes, I am the boss of you.") I also like to work the class against the student ("nobody leaves until everyone is done") or the inverse ("As soon as you are done you can go; but only when you are done.")

I did this for a year and I have no idea how I made it through. The kids need to realize that if they would just shut up and fucking be quiet I'd let them do whatever the hell they wanted. I just cannot stand all the fucking noise. 시끄럽다!!

lol I'm the same...if they stfu and aren't rude, I frankly don't care about anything else. It's the only thing I miss about my old students...they knew that, but it took time to get them to that stage. Now I'm losing it faster, which isn't good.

Hmmm...I'm going to try that "no one can go till you finish" next time. I admit, I'm always nervous to try something like that after I did that once at my old school and a parent complained that a punished their kid when it didn't do anything...and given how jumpy this school is (more so than the last one), I don't want to rock the boat toooooo much.

They all help the student and everything gets done real, REAL quick. Usually by that point the kid is not learning anyway, but you have to make him/her do SOMETHING. it is also a good way to (re)assert authority.

I use the "soccer ref" philosophy: I am always right, even when I am wrong, I am right. My classroom, my rules. I only threaten things I am willing to do and if I say I am going to do something ("the next time you...") I always do it. It sounds harsher than it is but as in dog training consistency is important
