The Widow
Though the shades were drawn
the slits still allowed a penance
to the lamp outside my window;
the effect was my usually dark room (hate this line)
now blushed a ray-less lavender
I encircle a phantom ring (confusing?)
And think back to the time when you
Showed me a hole in the ground,
Reminding me of your need for
something more-an adventure-
you explained this hole actually
went to China. I told you it was just a hole,
and if you jumped you’d kill yourself, and
I laughed at you, and you laughed with me.
And I kept laughing until you did jump.
I wonder now if you found your adventure;
The only conclusion I know
is that I now sleep alone,
Twirling a ring that I long since
boxed up with your things.
When morning matured and I found
I had had enough of your low-road to China.
I went out and bought myself a cat.
