In her lj, irish279 is starting to post recipes. I liked the idea, so I'm stealing borrowing it. Here's my candy cane ice cream recipe. I'd love it if everybody would reply with their favorite Holiday-time recipe. Merry Christmas all! *hugs*

ohh, the Candy Cane Ice Cream sounds wonderful and I'm going to have to give it a try one day. But you asked for us to reply with our favorite holiday receipes so I'm sending you the one for the traditional Christmas morning breakfast dish we have every year with the family. It's called a Strada and you can change it as you like.

preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Spray or lightly grease the bottom of a 13 x 9 x 2" pan.

Ingredients

8 slices of bread
8 eggs
1 pound of sausage
1 8 oz. package of shreaded cheese
1 medium onion or 1 bunch of green onion diced (stalks too)
1/2 of a green pepper - diced
1/2 of a red pepper - diced
1 cup of milk
1 to 2 teaspoons of yellow mustard
salt & pepper to taste.

Scramble the sausage in a pan until completely cooked, drain and set aside to cool. Tear up the 8 pieces of bread into bite sized pieces (with or without the crusts your preference) and let them dry out in the pre-greased or sprayed baking dish.

In a bowl combine the 8 eggs, onions, green & red peppers, milk, cheese, and mustard. Mix until thoroughly combined. Stir in the cooked sausage and pour the mixture over the torn up bread pieces.

Bake for 45 minutes to an hour in a 350 oven until the eggs are completely cooked. Let set for 5 or 10 minutes before cooking. Cut and serve.

It's a really simple dish and we enjoy it every year on Christmas morning with our family. It's become a tradition.

Variation: Replace the sausage with italian sausage, replace the bread with left over pizza (let it really dry out in the fridge) or cut up a couple of Boboli premade pizza crusts. Don't use the mustard and instead use a 1/2 of cup of tomato sauce and a 1/2 cup of milk. Replace the shreaded cheese with either the Sargento 6 cheese italian blend or just shreaded motzerella. Add garlic powder, oregano, & basil to the egg mixture before mixing it up and also adding a bit of grated parmesean and romano works well too. Also defrost and squeeze out all the excess moisture from a package of frozen chopped spinich (or use fresh baby spiniach leaves). (If using fresh spinach make a layer of this over the top of bread before adding the mixture.) Mix together and cook as above and it's my italian sausage and spinach casserole.

Enjoy.

This sounds sooo good! I'm not going to wait for Christmas to try it. I really like the leftover pizza variation, but I want to try the spinach casserole too. Yum!

Enjoy.

This is a receipe you can play with and make it your own. The original version is my mom's and the italian sausage and spinich is my concoction that just jumped into my brain one day. What works really good is if you get an order of the cheese covered garlic bread and us that. Just make sure that you're careful in putting the pieces into the pan you only want the bread touching the bottom and the parts with the cheese up because if not.. it will stick no matter what you do. Enjoy and I hope you like it.
