this made me cry

the following link details a case of severe neglect and could be triggering for survivors of abuse

I just read this article and am so upset. The girl in this article is named Dani (her adoptive/foster parents gave her this name). her horrendous neglect reminds me of Genie, the girl who was isolated in one room until she was 13 and never talked to, and was found in 1970. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genie_(feral_child)

The  article says that when authorities removed the girl from the home the mother was shrieking  "don't take my baby".

parents like that make me want to destroy them. She neglects Dani so severely that she cannot eat, talk, make eye contact, or react to any outside stimuli. She has anemia, is malnourished, has open sores and lice. She does not know her own name. She hasn't learned how to use her hands or to communicate in any way. Her only way to soothe herself is to suck her fists or "bat her feet, like an infant, because she was obviously never soothed by anyone in her life. The young girl is pretty much comatose and doesn't even react to pain. She functions on the level of a two-year old.

all of this because of an extremely abusive mother who cries, of course after the the damage has been done BY HER,  "don't take my baby"

Dani was taken in by a foster family, her  foster parents, Bernie and Diane are heroes in my eyes

Bernie and Diane wanted to adopt Dani, but the biological mother of Dani didn't want to give her up even though she was facing 20 years in jail for child abuse. So the So prosecutors offered a deal: If she waived her parental rights, they wouldn't send her to jail. She took the plea and got probation and community service. That is all. I don't understand WHY she still had parental rights, why Dani was not considered a ward of the state and why a "deal" had to be reached for her to be adopted. Don't "parents" (i put that term in quote for the obvious reason) lose their parental rights when they severely abuse a child? How could a woman do this to a young girl and then still get to "make deals" to decide the fate of her child who she never took care of?
