A Note on the Pains of Notes

Some people don't pre-write. I believe this is a major mistake. If your story doesn't need prewriting, it's probably not a very good story ( Read more... )

OMG, can I just say that the stream-of-consciousness quality of this journal made me all kinds of happy? That's the first comment. The second being I KNOW! How the heck do ppl write w/o the pre-writing part? I mean for crying out loud! I spend hours, DAYS just doing research before I feel properly prepared to start even PRE-writing. And I mean, of course, the story will morph as you go. I think that's unavoidable, but you need a basic map of where you're going before you can try to get there, right? I really feel like a lot of writers don't get that. I have a friend who is amazing and writing papers and the like, and she wants to write stories but can never manage it. I'm gonna bet it's because she never spends any time plotting where the story is going to go.

While I'm at it, I'd also like to tack of the question of writers who write w/o doing any research. It's like...if you're posting to the internet that means you have access to the internet and so have no excuse for misspelling Marluxia's name or like...not knowing what world Tidus is from or something. Some of the stuff ppl miss is so BASIC.

And what's this business about Xion? Are ppl shipping her with Riku? I'm SO out of the fandom loop right now...I say that as if I'm ever IN the fandom loop ^^;

I'm going to have to say that generally speaking, as much as I love the story behind Kingdom Hearts, whenever I play the game, I can't help but feel they don't do the story justice. There's no time to flesh out the characters, we don't really get to understand them as people, and yes, that is the nature of video games, but there is always a part of me that wants to read a novelization of the story. It's so hard to take seriously when the animation is clearly a cycled gesture, and there are just parts that should really have been more dramatic (i.e. Goofy's death) that were more or less glossed over in favor of getting back to the game-play. I know that seemed like a random jump off topic, but it kind of ties back in to the first point of your journal.

Since it does seem that the nature of video games is to sort of keep going even when things only sort of make sense, it almost feels like that's what's happening with the new games. It's like the games were made and the after the story was finished, people decided that other things had to have happened and instead of pre-writing, a lot of post-writing is going on. Maybe...maybe there was another member to the organization. And maybe long before Sora was chosen, there were other Keyblades and other masters, and so on. I mean, the ideas are cool and all, but it's like having ides and then trying to force them to tie in to the rest. That's just how it feels to me. It also makes it so hard for people who are really trying to flesh out the characters through writing to gain any ground because all of these curve balls come flying and throw everything that you had off.

So yeah...this turned into a much longer reply that I had intended but I think it's because it's really late and I can't sleep and my brain is in sort of a rambling mode...so I have rambled. I'll also say that for me Riku with Sora will always be my happy place, but when they are not TOGETHER together and just together as friends with SOs, it makes a lot more sense to me when Sora is with Leon and Riku with Cloud...I don't know why. That's just what my brain said.

Going to bed now...

I have an impulse to reply backwards because the last stuff is in my head first, but let me retract and reply to your book in order.

It's nice to know someone feels as I do about pre-writing. I keep hearing people at school bitching up a storm about their teachers wanting them to make outlines and pre-write and how they just "can't do that." And all I want to say is, "That's because you're probably stupid." I don't, but I want to.

You know, the stuff people miss and what some people post on the internet...Okay, so forums and blogs and whatever, I don't care. Misspell. Typo away. And I have tons of typos that I just don't catch in my stories, but I hate working with betas. I know it's smarter to have one, and I try to use them, but I forget about it. That's the honest truth. I forget about betas. But some people should really have them. Take pride in your work, is what I say. They shouldn't even be posting to the internet if you can't figure out how to use spell check or at least Wikipedia. Sure, it's not the most reputable source, but it sure helps for a fast check on things.

No, there's no shipping with Xion as far as I know. There's just this video/preview thing, I guess, where Riku's yelling at her or something. I don't know. I skimmed whatever I was reading about it, but I saw Riku's name, and just had a little shit fit. And yes, it's definitely was you say about post-writing. It's like they have these stories, get ideas later, and shove it all together. And it ticks me off. Birth by Sleep, fine, but make it a long time ago or something. Leave characters we're already familiar with out of it. This DS game with all the numbers (I can't remember them all) has just been ticking me off since I first read about it. Fourteenth Organization member my ass. At least the FFVII universe has gone in some kind of order. The KH universe is all over the place.

I totally respect and understand your love for Riku x Sora. I loved them a whole lot, too. I think I just got it in my head that Sora might be a little too 'good,' if you will, for Riku to handle, him being so emo and all. Or Leon mooning over Sora all through KH2 might have done it. Because Leon needs love, too.
