Review of "A Deadly Game" (A 'Castle' Episode)

May 18, 2010 19:18

I'm going to write up a few of my own thoughts about the Castle Season 2 finale, as well as some free-form speculation about Season 3, before I wander over to other people's journals to see what they thought.

I have mixed feelings about this episode. I mean, it was painful, but I think it was necessary. Yes, I want to see Castle and Beckett hook up as much as the next person, but I'm not convinced that it needs to happen quite yet. I don't believe in the Moonlighting curse. (One show. Over twenty years ago. Get over it.) But at the same time, I think they need to spend a more time on the UST (maybe a couple more seasons) before they move on to the RST.

The acting in this episode was fantastic. The nuances that Fillion and Katic were able to convey without speaking a word, just with their facial expressions, was amazing. My favorite scene, hands down, was when Castle broke up with Beckett, and Esposito and Ryan walked in a moment later and knew that something was deeply wrong.

Best bit of dialog, however, was "I won't get teased about that at all."

And I liked that they never made Demming a bad guy. Beckett has better taste than that.

And, yeah, it was more heartbreaking than tick, tick, tick ... boom! But that was okay. Beckett's not the wounded butterfly type. She'll be okay.

The murder of the week was pretty good. Loved the Spyventures concept, and how they bought into it at first. I want to know if there really is something like that, not because I could ever afford it, but just because it needs to exist. And it was awewome to see Skinner Mitch Pileggi as the "you mean this is real?" guy.

What I expect for Season 3:
In episode 1, Castle will come back. He will not still be with Gina (insert a line about "I remember why we got divorced.") He'll have finished his book. By the end of the episode, the formula of the show is back to the status quo - Castle following Beckett around and helping her solve murders.

Beckett will NOT confess her love, or anything like it. We may occasionally get some interesting twitches from her.

What I would (realistically) like to see happen in Season 3:
1. Castle meets Beckett's dad.
2. Another piece in the puzzle of Beckett's mother's murder. Don't have to solve it, just progress it.
3. Castle's solid purple shirt and red tie need to get lost at the dry cleaner's. I cannot tell you how desperately I need this to happen. I hate that shirt, especially with that tie.
4. Another big mid-season two-part adrenaline rush like "Tick, Tick, Tick ..." and "Boom!" Preferably with titles just as good as those.
5. I'd like them to spend some more time developing backgrounds/personalities for Lanie, Ryan and Esposito. Most of their screen time is spent being good at their jobs; I'd like to get to know them better.
6. A fake kiss. Honestly, I don't think we're going to get a real kiss in Season 3. But I'll settle for a kiss of necessity - you know the clichés: pretending to be married, pretending to be making out so the guy you're following doesn't notice you, mistletoe under duress, etc.

Is it September yet?
