Happy Winter Solstice!
As is my tradition, I review my year in fandom every December 21st.
This is my ninth anniversary as a fanfic writer, as someone who does more than just watch the movies and TV shows (and secretly reads the occasional fanfic) but actually goes out there and participates.
I've been in a bit of a slump, I admit it. I wrote exactly four fanfics in the last year - and one of them was a drabble. But one of them makes me grin just thinking about it - the crackiest crack fic ever. Called " A Most Unusual Friendship", it's a dialog-only crossover featuring a friendship between Haven's Barn and Once Upon a Time's Dark Curse. Now, neither of these things are people. They're a building. (Sortof.) And a magic spell. Not people. Well, they weren't before my fic, anyhow.
I'm still maintaining the Haven Public Library, but it's stopped being fun and started being a chore. And while there's more work I want to put into it, it's just that. Work. I dunno, stopping before Haven's over - which might be next year and might not - feels like quitting. But it's a lot of my time, and if it's not fun any more, then why am I doing it?
Maybe it's because I'm not enjoying Haven quite as much as I used to. Don't get me wrong, I still like it, I still watch it. But it's lost that addict's buzz for me. I started writing reviews for every episode in this last season but I stopped after the first three or so because I didn't really have anything to say. Duke is amusing. Mara is annoying. And really annoying. And will they kill her off, already? Yay, Audrey/Nathan. And, really, I didn't have that many opinions beyond that. And next season's going to have (spoiler) as a guest star, and I find that very disappointing, because, yes, okay, he's a science fiction legend but really not that good of an actor. Heresy, I know.
So, what's my future in fandom? In ficwriting? I don't know. I certainly appreciate all of you, my friends in the (increasingly empty) halls of LiveJournal. So, happy holidays, hope you have a great year next year, and with this post I once again claim this, the longest night of the year.
