Haven in the Digital Age

My weekly compilation of thoughts about "Countdown," the latest episode of Haven.

I initially wondered if there wasn't already an episode of Haven called "Countdown"? It would have been apropos to last season. But no, that was Castle.

You know the drill - spoilers for the past are fine, spoilers for the present are inevitable, but spoilers for the future are shushed and asked to leave the library.

I've decided that I really like the pacing of this season. Things that I expected to get drawn out until the end of the season have been taking a single episode - like the viewers knowing but Nathan not knowing that Lexie's Audrey.

I have to say, again, that I really like the direction that they've taken the Nathan and Duke friendship this season. Nathan asking Duke to look after Lexie when he's gone - and trying to figure out if Duke's interested in Jennifer, presumably trying to get a sense of if Duke and Lexie have a future - was charming.

I really, really liked the new coroner, Gloria, and I hope we see her again. It was also interesting to see another Season 1 Troubled character, Vicki, reappearing. It feels like devout viewers are being rewarded by all these old characters reappearing.

And then there's Vince - Vince was married? Vince is Troubled? Is it the disappearing/reappearing tattoo? If it is, that's a pretty lame Trouble. And also, if it is, does that mean he's related to Julia Carr? And it was so odd to see an episode with Vince but not Dave. Not bad, just odd.

And more behind-the-scenes trivia for you: the actress that plays Vicki, the coroner's assistant, is the daughter of the actor that plays Dave Teagues.

I have to say, that even though I've never particularly liked Jordan - her nonstop whining was extremely grating - she actually redeemed herself a little bit, realizing that she was becoming a really bad person ( a "monster"), and taking steps to change that. Not many people could be quite that self-aware, and it took courage. I won't miss you, Jordan, but for that, I hope you rest in peace.

I did expect Wade to be the enemy Crocker eventually, but I didn't expect him to be quite so sociopathic about it.

Hey, there was a Trouble-of-the-Week, wasn't there? I got so caught up in all the character development that I almost forgot. Mostly, I wondered how his Trouble would have worked for his ancestors, before there were digital countdown clocks.
