They were told not to give their names. Just to pick a color and write it on the name tag. This putting the anonymity in anonymous. This small group of rape and sexual trauma survivors and victims were gathered together in the dank, musty, one room basement of a small church in Manhattan.

Everyone was looking around at the dark faces of the others. Old and young, Black and white, men and women. It was truly a dark scene to behold. The group “leader”, Ellen-Beth was the only one with a name. She was describing to the group about what is said in the room stays there.

Nobody volunteered to speak first. Nobody wanted to talk. They wanted somebody else to talk first. For some the pain was to new. For some the torture was so old and agonizing that speaking would mean the end.
