Healing, of course. Given the dangers we tend to face, it comes in handy quite often.

Healing can only do so much. Even if wounds heal, it is likely to only be temporary. As is all things, such as death.

[Despite his words, his tone doesn't sound aggressive or even argumentative. Just playing Devil's Advocate here.]

It can still be vital in combat situations. All the offensive power in the world can't help you if you're too wounded to use it. Besides...temporary or not here, dying has its own issues. I'd rather avoid them.

Indeed. I have not known anyone who could perform healing magic. It has been many decades since I saw pure magic being performed. [Which makes him hesitant. Magic depends so much on natural potential and he doesn't quite have it.] All things do have a price I suppose. Your outlook is welcomed.

...you're welcome? I know a variety of magic, but lacking healing for a while, I know how valuable it can be.

Are you a witch then?

I'm a Summoner and Black Mage; someone who knows elemental magic.

Summoner and Black Mage. [Repeated quietly to himself. He never heard of a Summoner, but he can gather an educated guess on what that entails.] Were you born with your potential then?

More or less, but it took some training to hone that potential.

As does all potential any one person may have. Having that potential alone is impressive. [Of course this is coming from a guy who lives in a world where magic users all generally extinct.]

It comes in handy, especially during the drafts.

The drafts. [He says forcefully. That sea warfare one was nothing for him, but he did hear of causalities that came from it.] Do they simply throw us into combat on a whim?

...I hate to say it, but it's not that simple. It's not random; I think they can take whoever will adjust past the barrier. However, they have no regard for whether or not the person in question has combat experience. As for who we're fighting, they would just as soon rather see us all dead. Battling them is pure self-defense.

Self-defense will not do anything for us. We must be equally as aggressive against those that wish to kill us. Even if we are sent to fight by our captors, it is in our best interest to fight. Those without experience should be taught.

That's the idea. Some of our residents are running a fighting school, which I think has drawn some people. There are also training programs at the battle dome; at least one was tailored to a previous mission of ours.
