NBC bought the Sci-fi channel and renamed it syfy...one of the casualties being the Battle Star Galactica spin-off series - CAPRICA. The final five episodes aired all in one night ( I watched them on syfy rewind) - and it was truly worth watching. This is how you create a great ending to a show that had much potential. The three realms represented in Caprica were well-produced, acted, and believable as a reality very near our own focusing on technological and a socio-political precursor to the destruction of the human race in BSG. Shreds and patches of the 1930's - 50's blended with a sleek, high-tech upper class and a youth in revolt element that could be straight out of the 1990's or today by the way they were dressed. The series is very well thought out and beautifully written with a splendid score by Bear McCreary and opening title sequence. The religion created by Ron More, David Eick and Jane Espenson focuses on the monotheism of the cylons and how it came to pass. Issues of fundamentalism - terrorism, mafia - Caprica examines the dark side of religion and spirituality by giving it a very human side with well written motivations and, at its core, a Father/Daughter nod to Metropolis in the GrayStones (A play on Burroughs Greystoke I imagine) where a version of the teen daughter is trapped in the body of a cylon prototype. *SPOILERS* essentially Zoe Graystone is Cylon number one on Caprica - and she becomes the first cylon "skin job" as glimpsed by the last episode. In Apotheosis we see a preview of the second season that was to come - and it looked amazing. I have a feeling they will get to make the second season of Caprica - if not at least in graphic novel format or webisodes to finish the thread of a good sci-fi tale.
On a similar note - I have been watching the Russel T. Davies Dr.Who episodes - on Netflix. David Tennant and Catherine Tate are my favorites - the Ninth Dr. as the Hermit-time-lord has got to be my favorite Doctor tho Matt Smith is really easy on the eyes... even if he is a bit alien and whimsical - but that's the spirit of the Doctor I suppose. So I have been a sci-fi nerd over the break...taking in some really well written and fun story lines. I also managed to read most of the book The Shallows by David Carr - an important book for the future of our brains and our cultural heritage... if not just to have shallow brain matter for the zombie apocalypse - I guess the question is - are you eating the shallow brain matter or being eaten - probably a bit of both - Neuroplasticity is a funny thing. I feel it really comes down to a loss of meaning and deep thinking/feeling - and how we derive meaning from our activities... will you remember a life-changing text message as much as a letter or postcard you receive in the mail?? Especially when you receive hundreds of texts a day or week? bah - In conversation do you find yourself saying - "Oh that's what Fred said to me...," but in reality you just read it on his blog or it was just a text message...??
Somethings got to give because this technology is taking so much...
My dreams have been very intense and vivid lately - not sure if I've just been sleeping better - or if the work I do in my dreams is just seeping over more into the waking world - all of the above? One thing that does stand out is the visitations - I've been visiting jobs I have had and people I have known for good or ill in my dreams lately. No nightmares really - unless I count working at Moon Distributin - that was a nightmare in many ways... Its good to see everyone in my dreams - perhaps the threads of the collective unconsciousness are binding ever tighter to prepare us for the days to come..."I hold the line - the line of strength that pulls me through The fear" - The year of the Rabbit will be a daring Adventure - hope I see you in the flesh and not just in my dreamings.
My horoscopes have been mentioning me finding someone to date soon - I need to put myself out there more if that is going to become a reality - I'm open to suggestions
