The Windowsill Belongs To Me

Seagull

A seagull settles to my windowsill,
inviting me to circle the ends of time and space.
I throw my heart to the corners of the sea--
perhaps heartache, sacrificed, will calm this view
and I'll see farther for it.

It's wrong to miss you.
It's wrong to hate you.
My heart, my self, my love
are locked away in yours.

Long hair caresses the empty wind
rather than your chest...
I'm with the million miles of distance.
Winter is gone;
Spring is left lonely.

I can't see you.
I can't find you.
This feeling, this person, this dream
melt to dust in your image.

Seagull flies, my heart on its wings...
I part from all,
and let the thought of you chase me
past a thousand mountains,
beyond a million waters...

Seagull flies, my love in its eyes...
I forget all
those experiments of Earth and Sky--
let them shrink to dreams,
let darkness wake to your smile.

***Disclaimer: I took quite a lot of liberty in translating this, so much that I'm not even going to mention the title of the original song. If you compared lyrics, none of it would really match up except random words here and there. I just took what I understood and ran with it. So let's just say, this is a poem entirely written by Marie Duan, with inspiration taken from a favorite Chinese musical piece from childhood.
