I've been feeling the self-imposed guilt of my purchases lately, and also have started getting a bit of the flak from the hubs. So I've been brainstorming. Short of illicit activities on certain sleazy streetcorners, I've been at a loss.
One thought - I'm a crafty person, and I want to be making more crafts and selling them on etsy. So I could feasibly set a 'buy one sample/bottle/etc, make and post one item on etsy' rule.
Personally, I'm a bit torn on that simply because as a reforming packrat, my clutter-filled home stifles my creativity and I don't feel able to make anything until the clutter is gone. Also, I'm planning on disposing of most of the clutter in a massive garage sale this summer. So, my current bargain with myself is as follows: for every sample and/or bottle I purchase, I have to spend 15 minutes decluttering. And I can't get behind more than 5 times, meaning that if one of you runs a gigantoriffic circle, I have to limit myself to 5, or do a whole hell of a lot of cleaning that day, lol. Once the decluttering is done, it will be 15 minutes of garage sale prep, and once the garage sale is done, it will be back to the make-and-post on etsy plan!
Also, an agreement I set up with my hubs, which is a more concrete source of money, sort of: Every time I want to purchase something, seriously want to purchase it, and I resist the urge I get a credit of sorts. I can't just think 'oh, I'd like to have that', it has to be an actual resistance. For instance, the ladies at work all order out and I resist and eat the lunch I brought from home. I get to keep a third of that money since it would have been 'spent' anyway. So if I would have spent $6 on lunch, I get $2 towards perfumeries.
Unfortunately we're using that method to get me out of perfume debt, since I spent a good chunk recently that wasn't exactly budgeted, lol. So I won't be accruing money TO spend for a while.
But that's what works for us right now.
Also I have lots of books to post on ebay/amazon, but I was doing that and none of them were selling so I'm a little discouraged. And thus am focusing on the garage sale method. But maybe I'll do 15 minutes of cleaning AND post one book on ebay for each purchase.
