[after all that piano talk with Iceland, Charles has taken it upon himself to finally test out the piano in the school.
anyone in the vicinity will be able to hear a rather well-played
song, though it pauses at random intervals while the tiny grumpy pianist gripes about a few out-of-tune chords.
the door to the room is open. listen in/bother/steal

guess who's turned up to walk back with you again. Clearly you have no choice in the matter braw.
Anyway, he turned up at the front on his way over from the high school, but he hadn't spotted you and thus has come inside the elementary to look. It doesn't take him long to find CHARLIE, as he follows the sound of the piano playing.
Don't mind him blatantly just standing next to you to listen now.]

since you're a nice quiet ninja and he's somewhat used to your appearing out of nowhere at the end of the day, he's not too bothered by your presence and continues playing the song the rest of the way through.
surprisingly, there aren't too many mistakes. which is probably good for the rest of the music room, including the band stands that he hasn't yet flung into the opposite wall out of frustration.]

He does sit nice and quietly
Hope you don't mind the bottomless pit going for one of your cakes though.]

as soon as the song is done, though, he's going to be moving the remainder awaaay because sharing is for losers.]

...Do you know Mo Li Hua?
[Not because China would sing all the old folk songs to him when he was a baby, before he was taken away by England, or anything bawwwww like that. Shut ip]

the first few notes are choppy and he has to redo a few parts at first, but he eventually picks up the proper flow and plays it through quite nicely.]

It's only a few minutes after Charles is done that he speaks.]
Shame I don't have my Gaohu.
[He can play. But predictably he rarely practices. The thing usually sat in a corner of his apartment in Mid-levels, collecting dust.]

[seeing as Vietnam had given a wonderful demonstration of her magic fluting skills earlier, he's actually pretty curious to see what HK can do, assuming being musically inclined ran in the...'family'.]

[He means because of becoming a colony and England's efforts to make him a sophisticated GENTLEMAN no doubt.]
I was never very keen on that though. I can play a little of the Dizi too.
[Does he have the natural talent? Yes. Good luck trying to get him to really committ to it though. As much as he enjoys music. Just look at all his operas and concerts.]

he's just going to lineface in your general direction and gesture towards some of the violin cases lined up against the side of the room. there were no proper Eastern instruments around and even the Western ones were of poor quality, but hey. music is music.]
I want to hear you play.

but hey ho, they're friends.
He's grabbed a violin, checking it's in tune, warming up a bit blah blah. It's pretty obvious he's rusty and doesn't play much, but he can coast along and cover it up pretty well. Typical Hong Kong. One of the things you can tell he finds awkward is the way the instrument is held compared to the Gaohu or Erhu. That was always what he found awkward.
Eventually he starts playing this.
WITH AN UTTERLY BLANK FACE.
You honestly didn't think he'd do what you asked straight off the bat did you?]

hope you have some ninja dodging skills because he has taken it upon himself to lob the little detachable music stand in your direction.]
Reply
how else would he get away with this stuff.]
That wasn't very nice. I was just giving you a vivid musical picture of my house at 3AM.

[if that much wasn't already obvious from the violent throwing of stuff. for a moment he even looks like he's going to try to chuck something bigger because HK is a gd ninja and escaped his wrath the first time around.]

[Going back to his playing position
and starts this.
Yes it's from a movie.
COMPROMISE CHARLIE. COMPROMISE.
He doubts you'll know it anyway.]
Reply
and it's probably a good thing he doesn't know this comes from a movie because he actually finds it pretty decent along with HK's playing despite the awkward handling.]
...It was better than that ear-splitting garbage before, at least.
