"You looked beautiful tonight."

"Did I?"

"Yes." The Doctor rested his chin on Catherine's shoulder, sliding closer under the covers, his brown eyes twinkling as he beamed at her. "You reminded me of… erm. Of… well. Of something really really beautiful."

Catherine laughed softly. "Thank you. And you reminded me… of a lighthouse."

"A… lighthouse." The Doctor's brow creased, and he blinked at her.

When Catherine and Ace came back inside from the garden, the party was still in full swing. They parted ways just inside the French doors, at the edge of the large gathering room where everyone was congregating. Ace was off to find the Doctor she'd accompanied tonight; Catherine had already had a dance with him, so she didn't follow, figuring those two might want to catch up or dance or something.

She surveyed the room, and the sheer number of people milling around inside it, and she couldn't help but idly wonder how many of these people Nathan Petrelli actually knew personally. It would be nice, she thought, if she knew more of these faces herself.

"A lighthouse."

"Yes, Doctor. A lighthouse."

Catherine edged along the outskirts of the crowd, nodding politely at people as they passed. She felt terribly out of her element here. Social interaction had never been her strength, not in any of her lives; she certainly didn't think she was making any great strides here.

She sensed a pair of eyes sweeping over her, and she paused, turning, to figure out who was watching.

"Just to clarify… you mean a lighthouse, right? A… house, with a light on top?"

"Yes."

The Doctor scratched the back of his neck, then propped himself up on that elbow, resting a freckled cheek in his hand. "In a harbour, yes? To help ships navigate?"

"That's what I mean, love, yes."

The Doctor was standing right in the centre of the room. He was already among the tallest people present; the shock of thick brown hair, artfully unruly, only served to make him stand out more.

Bodies moved around him, partygoers coming and going, mingling and separating, but his body remained tall, still, rising above the sea of figures around him as his eyes searched the crowd. Then his gaze fell upon her, and his face lit up, eyes brightening, his mouth splitting into that brilliant grin that was his and his alone.

"Lighthouses. They can be. You know." The Doctor gestured. "Towers, sort of. Long. Thick."

"They can be, yes, I suppose."

He quirked an eyebrow and broke into rather a smug little smirk. "You're attempting to compliment me on my sexual anatomy again, aren't you."

"No!" Catherine laughed, rolling onto her side to face him, throwing an arm around his waist. "I'm not. Not this time, anyway…"

He'd been tugging his ear, but as soon as that smile came to his lips, his hand fell to his side. He just stood there, beaming at her.

Catherine couldn't have stayed away if she tried. She began weaving her way through the crowd, drawn in by that smile, the light in his eyes. He was her beacon, standing there in the swirl of the crowd, and her eyes never left him as she sailed across the floor, making her way to him.

Then she was there, looking up at him, and without a word, he pulled her into a hug, enfolding her in his arms. She'd found her safe harbour in the midst of this gathering.

"All right. I give up, Catherine. Why a lighthouse?"

She leaned in, kissing him softly. "You led me home, didn't you…?"
