Elizabeth and I spent a delightful afternoon at our son Brian's house celebrating birthdays for my son-in-law Geoff and my granddaughter Alex. Their actual birthdays were in July but as is often the case in our family, this was the first weekend we were all available to celebrate. We gathered on the 2nd story deck Brian had built at the back of the old house. I say "old house" because he bought our house when we bought the Bhigg House. In those older days there was a large back porch on the house. We had a door built on the second story to allow access to the roof as a fire exit. We occasionally would treat the roof like a deck and perhaps this was the seed of Brian's deck.
The afternoon was lovely and the little trees Elizabeth had let grow to shade the garage now also shade the deck. Brian handled the bbq duties and the rest of us handled the eating. He is a very good cook.
After much family gossip we got down to the important part of the day, the gifts. :) Geoff was pleased with our gift of tickets to the local hockey team, the "manitoba Moose". Alex was excited over the walkie talkies she received but the real hit was a Boggle game - or maybe a henna painting kit.
A great day spent with a great family. I am so lucky.
