Name: Jon Skovron
'09 Book Title: Grope 4 Luna
Publisher: Abrams Amulet
Favorite Books: Too many to list all together, so I'll just limit to of few YA titles I liked: UN LUN DUN by China Mieville, I AM THE MESSENGER, by Markus Zusak, A PRINCESS OF ROUMANIA, by Paul Park, RUNAWAYS by Brian K Vaughan, Adrian Alphona, and Takeshi Miyazawa, CORALINE by Neil Gaiman, GODLESS by Pete Hautman,
Favorite Bit of Writing Advice: It depends on the day, but a good one is from Steven King: “You can approach the act of writing with nervousness, excitement, hopefulness, or even despair-the sense that you can never completely put on the page what’s in your mind and heart. You can come to the act with your fists clenched and your eyes narrowed, ready to kick ass and take down names. You can come to it because you want a girl to marry you or because you want to change the world. Come to it any way but lightly. Let me say it again: you must not come lightly to the blank page."
Random Info About Me: I only have nine fingers, and I can't stand any food that tastes sweet (yes, even cake, ice cream, fruit, juice, insert your personal favorite). I also play nine instruments, but none of them well.
Grope 4 Luna Synopsis:
More than anything, Sammy wants his rock band to be famous. But the problem is that his front man is a jerk, a slacker, and a terrible singer. His best friend, Jen5, tells him that he should drop the guy and become the front man. She doesn't seem to understand why Sammy can play guitar in front of people, under no circumstances can he ever be a front man. Sammy needs this band, though, because it's the only good thing he's got going. His father skipped out before he was born, his mother is an overworked therapist with a drinking problem, his grandfather is slowly losing his mind to Alzeimer's, and the girl he's in love with is dating his jerk lead singer.
But then Sammy finds out that Jen5 wants to be more than just friends. Then he gets in a fight with his lead singer and it looks like the band might be breaking up. Worst of all, his grandfather's mental state goes from harmless senility to frightening paranoia. Someone has do something and everyone is looking at Sammy. Will he step up to the mic?
