NEW YORK (CNN) -- Actor and writer Spalding Gray, known for writing and starring in the autobiographical film "Swimming to Cambodia," has been reported missing.
The 62-year-old performer, who has appeared in movies such as "The Killing Fields," "Beaches," "The Paper" and "Kate & Leopold," disappeared over the weekend.
Gray's wife, Kathleen Russo, reported her husband missing at 7 p.m. Sunday, about 24 hours after he was last seen, a New York Police Department spokesman said.
She is believed to be staying at the couple's other home, in Sag Harbor, where their children live with a nanny.
A woman who answered the phone at that home told CNN that Gray's wife did not want to talk but "she just asks that you help us find him."
She said Gray "does have a history of depression but he has never disappeared like this before."
The investigation is being jointly conducted by the New York Police Department and the Southampton Town Police Department, the spokesman said.
According to Lt. William Armstrong of the Southampton department, Gray was last seen in his apartment in Manhattan's Soho district Saturday afternoon.
Armstrong said Gray was scheduled to fly to Colorado for a skiing vacation Saturday but his flight was delayed until Sunday.
Gray left the apartment Saturday for an early dinner appointment with friends but never arrived.
He was last heard from at 9 p.m. Saturday when he called his Sag Harbor home on Long Island and spoke with his 6-year-old son, saying, "I'll see you soon," Armstrong said.
Armstrong said that the last time Gray and his wife were at their Sag Harbor home was Christmas Day. He said they lived primarily in their Soho apartment and would visit their children in Sag Harbor, where they were cared for by a full-time nanny.
Gray has three children. His youngest is 6, and his oldest child is a 17-year-old daughter.
Russo was unavailable for comment. According to Gray's nanny, Russo was traveling to Sag Harbor.
Gray's older brother, Rockwell Gray, an English professor at Washington University in St. Louis, said he learned that his brother was missing Sunday morning from Russo. He said he had last seen his brother around Christmas.
The New York Times reported that Rockwell Gray said his brother seemed depressed at that time.
"I wouldn't say he was in a happy state," he told the Times. "He's been in a fairly depressed condition for some time."
