They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them..
Today I use my LJ as a memorial for some of the people behind the statistics; People who lived, loved. were loved; whose loss was deeply mourned, who were and are so much more than a name on a war memorial, an unmarked grave "Somewhere in France" or a white, cross marked, stone with name,age date of death, regiment,rank and number surrounded by an unthinkable expanse of so many other such markers; Doomed youth indeed.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.

Anthem for Doomed Youth
What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
Only the monsterous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells,
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,--
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.
What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of the boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of good-byes.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.
Wilfred Owen 1893-1918

There are several Harold or Harry Raymonds on the War Graves commission site but not enough details to be sure of the right one. Harry and Christiana were my great grandparents. Harry, Frank and James were their beloved sons, my grandmother's beloved brothers.
Frank's employer requested that Frank be exempted from service. He was needed on the land. The request was refused. He was invalided out with TB and survived to marry but died of complications of the TB
