How Not To Marinate Chicken

Jun 29, 2008 17:50

I decided to make ginger honey chicken this afternoon. It requires marinating, so I merrily started chopping away at ginger, chili peppers, garlic, and lime.
Soon after chopping the pepper, I noticed that my face was burning. Now, it has been a few years since the incident where I put my contacts in after chopping chili peppers, and I admit, i have grown careless in the interim (although you'll notice I never wear contacts anymore).
But I've never had a problem with simple contact with jalapenos. Anyway, I tried putting honey on my now-burning-like-fire-face, but that didn't work. I tried cooking and ignoring, also a failed strategy.
Eventually, I looked it up on the internet. The internet said, apply oil or vinegar. I tried olive oil, and although it made it burn even more fiercely initially, it helped soothe the burn quickly.
So if you too, foolishly touch a sensitive area (note: be careful if you have to pee whilst cooking with chillis) while cooking, just apply oil, making sure to leave it on for a good long while.

Anyway, shortly after that, while I was cutting up chicken, I embedded a tiny shard of glass in my toe. It's just not my day. And then, I got all worried about infecting myself with some sort of chicken disease, so I hit up the peroxide a few times.
I am now wearing one sock, and am on alert for future kitchen mishaps.
