In Memory of Nobuko Alyce Shoji
April 4, 1920 - September 11, 2015
Auntie Nobuko was "Auntie Nice". She was the 4th of 9 children on Mom's side. She was married over 50 years to Uncle George (he passed away around 1990?). She had 4 sons, 5 grandkids and 8 great-grandkids.
Spent lots of time at her place on Sherman Island. T'was always interesting driving along the levee to their place. Actually, I think the scariest ride I'd ever had was zipping along the levee with my cousins. (at night, with the fog coming in)
She always made fried won tons, layered finger jello and mochi.
Auntie was the only aunt who failed the "name the baby photo" game at the Los Angeles Family Reunion. She got her own kids wrong.
My sister Karen, Auntie Nobuko, Auntie Clara, cousin Patty and I went to Japan in 1998. As we touched down at Narita, Auntie Nobuko said "By golly, we made it!" This was her very first plane ride.
When we were planning a trip back to east to attend her grandson's wedding in Buffalo, NY, I asked her what she'd like to see in NYC.
"I'd like to see the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and the Lincoln Memorial".
I replied "Uh, Auntie, the Lincoln Memorial is not in NYC"
She said "I know, but I still want to see it"
So, we ended up going to Washington DC too.
Auntie Yoshi (aka Auntie June), on the left and Auntie Nobuko on the right. Get the two of them together and they'd be up to no good. Cousin Lucy and I gave up trying to keep up with them on Reno trips.
