Without the sky

Yunho is already home. That’s one surprise Jaejoong wants to ignore. Forcefully, he gets out of the bed. Two tablets of aspirin and a handful of tap water later, Jaejoong returns to his place.

“ I made you dinner.”  Yunho tells from behind his study. The duvet ruffles but what follows is stillness.

“ And a happy birthday to me.” Silently, Yunho drops the black rimmed glasses he wears onto the desk.

Everything is difficult now. Yunho was once happy with this marriage. He had dreams and expectations. He had Jaejoong.

But everything is gone.

The fourth can of alcohol he downed and Jaejoong is barely sober.  Yoochun doesn’t like how this is going. Yunho can return any time soon.

“ Hyung..”

“ Look, Chun. Wasn’t she adorable?”

Yoochun had seen that footage a couple of times to find it familiar. A girl fell to her feet and held out her hand towards the lens. The camera switched from one person to another and the picture slanted to different angles.

Later, Jaejoong came in the frame. He was all that in the past, young with a wide smile and an open heart. Jaejoong held the girl in his arms, swaying her around and around before he planted a kiss on the girl’s cheek. Her giggle filled the air and Yunho’s envious voice was in the background saying this it was his turn to hold the girl.

“See. Sora has the same eyes like mine. Yunho always said that she looks like him. No way. My baby takes after me.”

If Yoochun could leave at that moment, he’d be on his feet, running away from this; another emotional breakdown; another roller coaster ride.

“ Do you know how much I love her?”

“ I know, hyung.”

“ No, you don’t.”

Yoochun was there, witnessing how Jaejoong succumb to fate, sure, he knows just as much.

“ I wish I knew.”

Jaejoong mumbled about something before he passed out and even in his sleep, Jaejoong looks unsettled. Having no option left, Yoochun waits for Yunho.

The businessman returns in time for Yoochun to leave and pick up his boyfriend from work. The husband scans the table as he enters, counting how many cans have Jaejoong emptied throughout the last few hours.

“ He had too much.”  Yoochun confesses, reaching for the door. The college boy looks that Yoochun offers is deceiving. It reminds Yunho of his past, where he was a football jock and Jaejoong was one of his many fans. They were inseparable at that time.

Things are far different now.

From Yunho’s weary smile, Yoochun knows that the man is helpless, stuck in a situation that none of them had deserved to be in the first place.

“ Take care of Jae-hyung for me.”  Yunho nods at the request, murmuring a goodnight Chun before he closes the door.

Jaejoong was never this light before. In Yunho’s arms, he is as frail as shard of glass. Yunho doesn’t remember the last time he did this. Above all, he can’t remember the last time they spoke. Their relationship had a name but Yunho can’t bring himself to even think about it.

On the bed, Jaejoong wriggles out from Yunho’s hands, drowsy but conscious enough when Yunho impulsively dips down for a kiss. “Don’t touch me.”  With arms flailing and smacking on Yunho’s chest, Jaejoong is unstoppable. The husband refuses to budge, receiving all the torment with a calm façade.

“ I hate you.”

“ You should.”

“ I hate you.”

Jaejoong doesn’t realize when he fell back into sleep. The morning after, he wakes up to see Yunho’s side of the bed unwrinkled.

Someone has been sleeping in the guest room again last night. Jaejoong clutch the duvet tighter.  He wants to cry but nothing is left for him to pour out.
