Recital

This weekend was busy, being taken up with housecleaning and cooking. We went to a 5-year-old niece's ballet recital yesterday, and came home very late. We were both exhausted. Neither of us got enough hours of sleep, and I am sitting here at work yawning.

A ballet recital is wonderful in part because the technical aspects of dance don't matter that much. The children's personalities shine so brightly that the performance is irresistible, no matter what. The tiniest child on the stage had the biggest personality; she was perhaps two, but a born performer, and she had us eating out of her hand before she'd been on stage for a full minute. Our niece looked tall and capable onstage, and was directing the other little girls when their teacher missed a step. She shows all that executive ability at age 5!

I was also thinking that, much as I enjoy ballet and think it's good for kids, I'd love a child of my own to learn traditional Irish or African dance (or both!). In our area, there are a number of groups that offer those to little children. But it would really depend on the child's own interest! If it were dance, then you could steer them in your preferred direction, but if the child wanted to take ballet specifically, then it would have to be ballet.

I got lost on the way home and ended up driving us the wrong way down the GW Parkway. This is always stressful to me as it is not an easy road on which to change direction; we went clear out to National and changed there. I could feel the tension in my arms and stomach; I hate driving when I'm that anxious. When we got back to the beltway, I started to feel quite sleepy and had to open a window and sing along with Eddie from Ohio very loudly in order to keep awake. I was grateful when we got home, though a bit grumbly that there were so many cats to feed and dishes to do before I could sleep.

Everyone loves my strawberry-rhubarb pie.
