Cubs pull interim tag, make Quade their manager I was under the mistaken belief that the Chicago Cubs were grooming Ryne Sandberg as the next manager. He did what was asked of him -- going down to the minor leagues and worked his way up to AAA Iowa, having success all along the way. But on Tuesday, the Chicago Cubs announced that interim manager Mike Quade would be named the next manager of the club.
To me, it seems like a slap in the face to Ryne. And apparently, his only option is to return to Iowa as manager next year. He doesn't even get the opportunity to coach at the major league level, at least not with the Cubs. I would not be surprised if Ryno goes to another team (like many other Cubs before him ex. Lou Brock, Ron Santo, Greg Maddux, Mark Grace... just to name a few). Why would Ryno want to stay with a club that essentially stabbed him in the back while smiling to his face? The Cubs are missing a golden opportunity if they let Ryno go to another team as a coach and he eventually becomes a major league manager and has great success.
