SALEM, Ore. - The Salem Fire Department responded to a structure fire, located at 1395 15th Street N.E., on Wednesday March 1, 2006.

The first alarm came in at 11 a.m. sending 3 Engines, 1 Ladder Truck, and a Battalion Chief.

First arriving firefighters discovered fire and heavy smoke coming from the front portion of the structure. Firefighters made an aggressive attack and stopped the fire just as it was penetrating the living portion of the home.

The fire was caused by a 3-year old girl who was visiting her grandmother. She was playing in the garage where a hamster inside its cage was sitting on a hot plate that was plugged in. The little girl turned on the hot plate, which ignited the cage. Fire quickly spread to other portions of the garage.

No one was injured due to the fire, although the hamster did not survive.

The fire caused $10,000 damage to the residence and contents.

Safety Reminder: Salem Fire Fighters want to remind our community it is very important to make sure portable heating appliances are unplugged when not in use. In addition, you should never set anything combustible on a heating element
