Wondercon report, H Day doggie

Wooo I'm still pretty tired from Wondercon...I had a lot of fun though! It was great being neighbors with Lark Pien right behind me, and Miriam Libicki & Mike Yoshioka to my left. My hero Keith Knight was just two booths down from me, so that was neat. I finally got to meet Keith's little boy and even watched him for a bit while his daddy went back outside to bring in more gear. Cute kid!

The "Thrilling Comics for Kids" panel was fun, and it went by quickly. It was great to meet Dan Santat, Jennifer Holm, Nathan Hale, and Jann Jones. Had some interesting discussion, and it definitely could've gone longer.

My personal highlight of the con was when Pullitzer Prize-winning author, Michael Chabon dropped by my booth with his kids! The story with Michael Chabon begins back in November 2009, when he made an appearance at my local library. I shyly told him how I saw him make the keynote speech at the Eisner Awards one year and it was all about how there weren't enough comics out there for kids. So I gave him a copy of "Bumperboy and the Loud, Loud Mountain" to show him my contribution and he seemed to be very grateful. He told me that he'd give it to his daughter. Well, when he and his family came by my table at Wondercon, his daughter told me she loved it! She quoted her favorite part of the book, told me how she lent it to her friend, etc. I was super stoked that they enjoyed it. I'm also very grateful to have met such a talented (and yet so humble and easy-going) author! I'm happy that he is part of Team Comics!

In other news, I just wanted to share my latest needle-felting project. This is a commission from the mega-talented Renee French!

This character is the star of her next book, "H Day", which is due out in the fall from Picturebox Books. I was so excited when she asked me to make this dog and I think it turned out pretty well!

Here's one of the pages from the book that Renee sent me for reference:

Her work is amazing, so please check out more of it at http://reneefrench.blogspot.com/!
