British vs. American English
I was chatting with a British friend today, and got the following message:
"Popping down bank quick"
If you're a Brit, this sentence makes perfect sense. If you're American, I'm sure you've seen My Fair Lady or Mary Poppins often enough to translate that, but you're probably still amused that there is "to" in that sentence. American English just doesn't drop that word, no matter how slangy we get.
Just for the sake of amusement I thought I'd provide a step-by-step translation into the equivalent American version.
Initial Message: Popping down bank quick
Longer British Translation: Popping down to the bank right quick
Brit/American Combi: Going to the bank right quick
Longer American Version: Going to the bank real quick
American chat slang: Running to bank. brb.
