We have a system of checks and balances in this country. Congress proposes legislation on a federal level, the president signs or vetoes said legislation, and if a case arises that calls into question the Constitutionality of said legislation the SCOTUS hears the case and rules on it. It is the duty of the State to make laws that are obeyed by the citizens of that state, who in turn have a system of checks and balances of their own, very similar to that on the federal level. These State Level laws are only to be overridden by Federal Law when laws are deemed necessary to protect or be obeyed by every citizen in the United States.

As the Congress has not chosen to vote upon or enact legislation that affects the country at the federal level, but rather to intervene in state law, they have overstepped the bounds of their duties and potentially forced the Supreme Court to rule on a case that they have previously decided not to hear. This case has run its course in the court of law and reached the highest court in the land. The decisions have been passed down and now it is time to abide by that law. Congress’s attempt to circumvent the judicial system of the State of Florida both tramples on the Constitutional states rights and hijacks the judicial system that it is their job to protect. And it was all done to score points with voters.

As there are no legal repercussions for Congress acting in such a way, this was all too easy to accomplish and only serves to prolong the inevitable. Unless Congress can come up with a reasonable, legal, justifiable law that covers all citizens party to this kind of situation, they have no grounds to be addressing one, single case. That is for the courts to rule upon (by interpreting existing law and applying it to a single case.) This is a clear breach of ethics and a misuse of the Legislative branch.
