The Rules
Each week, debates will be posted according to the
schedule, on Mondays at approximately Noon EST. Over the course of the season, each participant will debate the eight general topics, along with four current event debates. The topic for the current event debates will be assigned during the week prior to those debates. The topics will each be fairly broad, allowing for more variety each time the topic is debated. The person listed first (home) is allowed to frame the terms of the debate and choose a position to argue, and will also make their argument first. The other participant (away) will then post his/her rebuttal, which should reflect a position contrary to that of their opponent. This will mean that at some point, everyone will have to argue from a position that they don't necessarily agree with. It also creates a situation where strategy comes into play when selection an angle to debate from.
Debates will be closed each Saturday at approximately Noon EST, at which point all comments will be frozen.
Each council member will then post a list of winners for the debates they are eligible to judge. Council members will be responsible for judging all debate in which they do not participate. The appropriate alternates will post their decisions, when necessary. A sixth alternate, to be named later, will judge only those debates where a council member is debating his alternate. All judgement posts should be up by Noon EST the following Monday so that the standings can be updated regularly.
If a debate goes the entire week with no activity, it counts as a forfeit, and the winner is the 'home' participant by deafult. If the debate begins with the 'home' participant posting an opening comment, with no response from the 'away' participant, the 'home' participant wins by default. Forfeits count in the standings as regular wins and losses.
At the end of the season, the participants with the eight best records will move on to the playoffs. It will consist of three rounds, and a champion will be named at the end.
Good luck.
