Friday Night at the Circus

My friend Mariano decided to go to Atlanta for his 29th birthday celebration but neglected to secure transportation to and from the airport for his trip, so he asked me at the last minute, about midnight the night before he was leaving, that he had to be at the airport by 6am the next morning. I finally agreed to take him (meaning I had to get up by 4:45 and head to his house by 5:30 am to get him there on time after knowing I wasn't getting to sleep until about 1 am).

He did the same ting coming back, calling me the day he was sitting in the airport, in Miami no less because his flight got changed, letting me know he was going to be coming, not to Burbank where I dropped him off which is the same city he lives in, but to LAX in the middle of rush hour, so I had to deal with Los Angeles freeway traffic for at least an hour. He told me he would pay me back by buying me a fabulous dinner, but with the diet I'm on, it wasn't going to happen so I told him he would just owe me one.

Well, he definitely came through last night. He took me to Cirque Du Soliel's brand new production of Corteo (opening night was just the night before). We got there early because our tickets were going to be waiting for us at will call, and it was a good thing we were early because pulling up to the Forum, we saw the sign announcing that parking was $22.......PARKING WAS $22!!!! HOLY SHIT!!!! We opened our wallets and pooled our money and came up with a whole 8 bucks, so we had to turn around and go hunting for an ATM. When we found one I let him get the cash since this was supposed to be a thank you to me, but I did give him all of the cash I had as my part.

I have wanted to go to a Cirque Du Soliel show for years, and this one did not disappoint. He had been to one before, and kept comparing them, but I had no point of reference and LOVED it. Especially because it was kinda dark, with te ongoing storyline of a circus performer who is dreaming that he died and is imagining his funeral and such. The thing I thought was the most cool was the same as Mariano thought was the cheesiest. This woman was a tightrope walker and actually walked the tightrope on a huge incline, climbing up the rope while balancing on it. He wasn't impressed because she was attached to a wire above, but this was only for safety, not to keep her up which was apparent when she slipped once.

That brings up something else that didn't bother me, but was a problem for him. Since the show was so new, there were a few slip ups, mistakes, which I thought made the performers more human and endearing, but he said they were supposed to seem super human, and it ruined the illusion for him. Well since the night was for me and I enjoyed myself, that's all that mattered.
