I may have said this before, but Thrall's character arc through Wrath and Cata ONLY makes sense to me if viewed through the lens of mental illness.
Consider that Thrall: - was once decisive but now wavers over everything, or tries to run away from having to make decisions at all - has been known to lose his temper at people and circumstances that don't deserve it, while failing to slap down people who DO - clearly has a great deal of internalized guilt, doubt and worry, but sticks his head in the sand re: perfectly obvious ways to improve - avoids people who've been his long-time friends and mentors, but attaches himself almost desperately to a woman whom he doesn't know and initially doesn't even LIKE, just because she expresses an interest in him
THIS IS NOT THE BEHAVIOR OF AN EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY WARCHIEF, people. More to the point it's not behavior I'd have expected of THRALL.
And yes, as the__ivorytower and I concluded, if Aggra's been in a relationship with Thrall for months and never realized he wants a family, what the HELL have they been talking about?
...then again, considering you can't be in a conversation with Thrall for five minutes and miss the fact he wants world peace, one wonders if they ever talked at ALL. Or at least, if she listened to a word he said.
Deathy thinks you have mentioned this, and he really does agree.
It would be nice if something terrible happened to Aggra, though. Not that Deathy is suggesting he'd do such a thing. *Hides the lava buckets.*
Deathy... really does not get why Blizzard was so anti Thrall/Jaina, either. Aside from race, they mesh fairly well, and even a political alliance would have majorly upset the status quo and put the Horde and Alliance on the road to pea-
Oh.
We can't have THAT, now, can we? Not in WoW. Not ever.
Thrall really does smack of temporary insanity, doesn't he? We can only pray it's because of the spirits of the world being in turmoil and causing feedback into him. Because that's about the only excuse for this nonsense Deathy will take.
Aggra is not an interesting character, since, as he thinks you or Ivory mentioned, everything about her revolves around him in some way.
Hell, match Thrall up with Alexstrasza. That would be an interesting courtship and relationship.
Deathy wouldn't be adverse to slash, either, but that seems to be outside Blizzard's ideology right now.
...you know what *I* would have liked to see as the excuse for renewed Alliance vs. Horde hostilities, since hostilities we apparently must have?
Thrall and Jaina decide they can't sacrifice love for politics any longer - or better yet, someone exposes the very secret relationship they've ALREADY been carrying on for years. Political turmoil ensues. Varian (who'd been hoping to marry Jaina for political and, possibly, personal reasons) goes batshit. Anti-human factions within the Horde cause trouble to the point where Thrall resigns and leaves, rather than see his life's work torn apart. The eminently sensible successor he leaves behind is of course immediately challenged and deposed by Garrosh.
Instant faction war, without anyone's characterization being compromised or the most popular pairing in the fandom being broken up.
EDIT: and I don't exactly disapprove of slash either *coughcough* though I must admit I've always seen Thrall as predominantly straight... but hey, it's a challenge.
Really, have Thrall and Jaina's relationship exposed, Thrall quits, Cairne takes over, and Cairne is killed by Magatha/Garrosh, and it's pretty much right back to the canon status quo, only a lot more people are happy.
And Deathy agrees with Thrall's likely heterosexuality, but also wouldn't exactly object if Thrall decided he liked "whatever he felt like at the time". Just so long as that doesn't put him into "rampant debauchery" characterization, which it easily could.
*nods* Just because you're mostly straight doesn't mean you can't experiment? But I have this mental image of Thrall as being, frankly, SHY, and hung up as regards sex - he didn't have much contact with other orcs till he was in his teens, and thought the first ones he met were frankly ugly as fuck, but being attracted mostly to humans isn't uncomplicated either. So it's possible even he doesn't really know what he likes.
Very possible - Deathy thinks you or Ivory made the point that he'd been raised by humans, and would probably have assimilated quite a bit of human taste - from building aesthetic to appearances - and it's actually slightly surprising the Horde still looks as Orcish as it does; you would think Thrall would have slipped in a few small changes here and there, provided he could get it past the more traditional leaders.
As to Thrall's personal life, it's also very likely that he'd not be getting intimate with anyone any time soon. Though Deathy could see a one night thing with Baine after too much alcohol and weepy "I miss Cairne" talk.
