This entry was provoked by an entry of deans, and it got me thinking, its also where the relevance of this subject lies, dont think i'm just pulling this one out of a hat
The world today is a strange place, people are inwardly and outwardly backwards. We as human beings should be a race of people who revel in intelligence and emotion, (as we are seemingly the only things on the planet that are so advanced,) instead, we memorize facts, create useless garbage and turn ourselves into emotionally disconnected islands. People today can actually say that they feel alone when they are in a room full of people, or on the bus, or at school, or work. How does this happen, I mean, i know some of the reasons why it happens, but how do people let it happen. I mean there are people out there who turn themselves into socially adept shut ins, they live their lives surrounded by hundreds of people, yet never open themselves up emotionally, never connect with another human being, and they do this by choice. Its a scary thought to think that people could want to go through their lives alone. Another thing that gets me is there are people out there who are so concerned with the black and white of things (the really good and really bad) and as i see it they are missing out on the rest of life. There is so much in that inbetween that needs to be found, that people need to stop ignoring. People will focus only on the good and bad so much that they will start to see everything in their lives as a major acomplishment, or a major failure. I mean, I see people constantly beating themselves up over things that they had no control over and could never had, because they are human. People can be quite blind, they are constantly looking 8 steps ahed and they totally miss out on the now, and they wonder why they are miserable. You can't worry about your life in 10 years from now, you have to live your life right now. People seem to forget but we have an average of 80 years to live, and we decide our futures within the first quarter of our lives, and spend the rest looking for money until we die. This mentality needs to stop, money should not be the driving factor in our lives. Currency is valued more than time, people these days expect everything to be instantaneous, becuase they have always seen it happening this way. There are people out there who think that if they can shave a few years off of something (school boards/ontario gov't) to make it possible to make more money, that they can justify pressuring students into growing up prematurely. People don't realize that they are burning themsleves out before they even "earn a chance" to live as they say. What they don't realize is that stress disorders and ulcers are going to make their lives that much shorter anyways. I have thought about the word "sucess" many times, and i have come to the conclusion that my definition is different from the one that society is feeding me. MY definition is not one of wealth, power, luxury and materialism, instead it is one of self-satisfaction, one where i get to live my life at a pace i choose, and where i make the rules, one in which i'm happy with what i'm doing no matter what it is, because i am satisfied, the only thing that i will ever strive for is knowledge. Knowledge might not be the best word to describe what i mean, lets see if i can kill two birds with one stone here, I love learning, but i also dislike school. You ask how could this be? I will tell you, beacuse there is a mentality out there that learning is memorizing facts and being able to regurgiate them, I believe that learning comes from an understanding. I will give an example that holds pretty true, lets say that there is a note on the board, most students will spend all of their time writing the note down (they only ever have enough time to write it down) and and will not even actually read the stuff on the page. They then go back to it later on their own and read it (if they do at all) and memorise it. When test day comes along, those students with the better memory are the ones who do better. That description was a generalised one, not to say that that happens all the time, but that it does happen quite often. As i see it, its all fine and good to memorise something, but then you haven't learned anything, because it's possible to memorize something without understanding it. That is one of the major pitfalls in the education system these days. Ok, enough about why the school system is a quagmire of stupidity, I will finish with this point: Humans more than anything else need human contact, unconditional love, and proper health, everything else is just filler, think about your life, if there is one of those things you are missing (whatever that may be) concentrate on that, don't worry about the little things like school, work and money, concentrate on the things that should matter, your health and your happiness. I'm a strong believer in human perserverance, but we can't do it alone, we have always needed each other, so think about that next time you are feeling down, or even when you are feeling up, find someone who you can share a moment with to brighten their day, you don't know how much they'll appreciate it.
