Here.
personality: Bred from the starvation and poverty of his home in District 12, Gale, like so many children of the Seam, is forced into adulthood early on. He is viewed as a man at the early age of 14, after his father is killed in a mining accident, already six foot and colored by the same desperation of those around him. As the oldest child in his family, Gale takes on the responsibility of providing for his mother and his three siblings the only way he knows how: by collecting tesserae (year's supply of grain and oil for one person) and breaking the law to hunt for food. Of course, collecting tesserae requires him to be at a disadvantage because it means a higher chance of being called during the annual Reaping, but it's another burden Gale uncomplainingly accepts, so long as it means his siblings don't have to suffer the same. Hunting and trading, while illegal, is a means of escape for Gale. And it's how he meets Katniss.
Gale is portrayed as a strong and confident figure from the beginning, which later feeds into his role as a soldier. He never protests the responsibilities he's taken on as the oldest in his family, the provider, and his likeness to Katniss in this area draws them close to the point of becoming best friends in a divided world. If there's one thing Gale can be counted on, it's his loyalty to those he cares about. He never turns his back on friends or family, and possesses a pure hatred toward the Capitol that so suppresses and punishes them. He often confides this anger in Katniss whenever they go out hunting together, expressing how badly he wishes he could change the situation they're caught in if only he could.
It's no doubt Gale feels this way because of the circumstances he's trapped in while growing up in District 12. In fact, while seemingly strong and self-assured, Gale actually feels very helpless deep down. For so long he's watched his family and everyone he cares about suffer, something made worse when Katniss is forced into the Games. The destruction of District 12 later on, which Gale could do nothing to prevent, only deepens his guilt and feelings of helplessness. He wants to fight to win the freedom of his people, and it's this ideal which takes the forefront of everything Gale is as a person throughout the books. While at the start Gale accepts what he has to do in order to keep his family alive, he never once shrugs off the cruelties inflicted by the Capitol. They only build up in his mind until the moment he can spin them back on his enemies full-circle, fully emphasized in Mockingjay.
However, it's his relationship with Katniss that inevitably suffers because of his single-minded pursuit of taking down the Capitol. There's no question how much he cares about her, given the countless examples of Gale trying to protect her, admitting his love, always watching her back. But in comparison with Peeta's absolute dedication, Gale chooses his ideals over his love for Katniss. When she asks him to run away, he only agrees until he learns of the rebel uprisings happening in other Districts and then refuses to abandon his people. This perhaps dooms any chance of a future relationship between the two of them, because it's obvious he'll never be able to provide for her what Peeta can. In the end, Gale sees himself as a sacrifice to the cause before anything else.
His bloodlust against the Capitol rises to a boiling point in Mockingjay, where all of his pent-up anger can finally manifest itself in the violence of retribution. Gale doesn't hesitate when it comes to killing his enemies. This is another defining trait of Gale's character, because it sets him apart from Peeta. In many ways Peeta is his opposite -- and while Gale is very similar to Katniss, he goes above and beyond her own desire for vengeance in the final war. For instance, he doesn't see an issue in killing hundreds of innocents in order to wipe out a bigger threat. He shows hostility toward anyone even remotely connected to the Capitol, arguing with Katniss at each turn because of this, which only serves to widen the new rift between them. Gale is a perfect soldier. According to Katniss, he was born a rebel. And this is true every step of the way as Gale develops and comes to view his world more clearly.
On a more personal level, Gale is witty and blunt, much like Katniss. They share a similarly dry sense of humor, although Gale is much more open with her, sometimes even playful. Around other people, Gale is focused and unforgiving if the circumstances call for it. He has no problem saying what he means, and there's little question he would have spouted his blasphemous opinions about the Capitol in public if he thought there was any chance he could get away with it. He speaks his mind even if it generally leads to arguments.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Gale can be rather cruel. His keenness for understanding the mind of his enemy, in this case, makes Gale a particularly lethal person. He'll use whatever means possible to achieve his end, though he understands when a battle is lost -- after failing to protect Katniss' family, the only thing he had going for him, he moves on permanently. Gale is quick to anger and fiercely protective, the latter of which serves as his true kindness in the end. All he wants is to fight and defend those who matter to him and he doesn't care if he loses his life in the process.
abilities/powers: Gale is a natural hunter, though he specializes particularly in setting traps and snares. This later develops into designing lethal weapons and bombs used in the war against the Capitol. Gale is fairly adept at archery, though Katniss beats him in that area. He's pretty much built for combat, physically strong with a frightening talent for outsmarting his enemy. His main weakness is his anger. Gale is easily blinded by his bloodlust and often lets his temper get the best of him, usually in very ruthless ways.
first person sample:
[He's resorted to the odd piece of technology as a last ditch effort, cradling it in an unsteady hand. Gray eyes squint down at the screen, clouded with wincing pain.] I don't know... where this is exactly, and I'm not expecting an answer. From anyone. [His voice is hoarse, all but scraped from his throat, ragged and broken in places. Sheer determination to survive drives him on, even while half his mind yells trap. It doesn't make any sense, this situation. This isn't how they think.]
I'm surprised those Peacekeepers let me wander off in one piece. You know, I thought the Capitol had more fight in it. Guess they're too preoccupied to come and fetch a prisoner of war. [A gruff laugh. He blinks, unfocused, at the tag on his toe. Then away.] That room looked ready enough for torture.
[The camera dips a little as he coughs, partly revealing Gale in his thin paper gown. More red than white. It shouldn't be hard to recognize someone bleeding profusely where he leans against the wall, half-mad and laughing through his agony. Getting shot isn't fun, waking up dizzy and disoriented with blood loss even less so.]
A little -- help. Might be nice.
There are a few other voice samples here, too. third person sample: Waking winded, a scream on his lips, Gale's eyes cracked open to face the blinding lights above him. He felt very much alive, if the awful stabs of pain in his shoulder and leg were any indication. The shots still rang in his ears, sharp and shrill. He focused on easing steady breaths into his lungs even as he felt the gush of blood begin. Somehow, he didn't panic. Probably because he knew it was essential to keep his head about him right now. If they planned to torture him... He felt a pang, suddenly wishing he hadn't given Peeta his only nightlock tablet.
It didn't take Gale long to realize there was no one in the room with him. A quick scan of his dark gaze, skin prickling with a chill at the temperature of the room, assured this. Another fresh wave of pain stirred when Gale began to inch up on his elbows, teeth gritted together in a throbbing clench. Wherever they'd gone, they'd be coming back. And Gale didn't plan to be here when that happened. He knew the Capitol didn't make a habit of allowing prisoners free (except, possibly, in Peeta's case), especially prisoners of war, where every single one mattered. Where their rebel knowledge could be pricked and pried and pulled loose. Maybe Gale didn't matter as much as the victors. And maybe at this point it didn't make a difference one way or the other, with the Capitol surely under siege by now. But there was no telling
He really wished he knew what was going on.
Katniss.
She hadn't shot him. Of course not. Gale closed his eyes tightly in a bid to clear his head, one hand clamping firming over the wound in his shoulder. It only smeared his palm so it left a bloody print on everything he touched. But Gale didn't care. He needed something to stem the flow, but his clothes were gone (when had that happened?) and there didn't seem to be anything else in sight. Stumbling off of what he'd been lying on, Gale coughed so hard his whole body ached with the force. Then he looked around him again, spotted the silver tray nearby, and snatched up a gleaming scalpel. It was quickly sticky with blood, but he knew he needed all possible defense.
Gale took in a shaky breath, stepping carefully, and as stealthily as his wounded body could muster, out into the empty hall.
