Hah, your comment reminds me of Professor and The Uncle by copperbadge. Amusing reads.

At first, I thought, that Remus might be travelling via the Express because he was sick from a full moon since it was on August 28 back in 93'. But then I remembered that usually, teachers need to be at least two weeks before the school year starts in the school so the lesson plans would be finished and any new teachers (Remus) would need to set up their offices and classes. So why would Remus leave the school premisses just before full moon? Especially since he should check out whatever protections Dumbledore prepared for him during the full moon.
I think that he apparated the straight out of Shrieking Shack to the train station.

Remus being magical exterminator would be better for an explanation for his knowledge than canon one. Honestly, now that I think about it, appointing Remus as DADA teacher sounds kind of racist (?). Yeah sure, in canon Remus does have the knowledge, but from an outside perspective, it's such 'fight fire with fire' move.

I have a theory about Dementors on my backburner, but I can't get around sitting down, doing research and doing it justice. Basically, I think that Dementors feed off souls and magic, period. No there is no feeding off emotions and yes it gets worse. Here is what I think: being around Dementors causes damage to your soul. Just like with murder it causes fragmentation of your soul, BUT since Dementors in my theory are basically magical black holes, they feed off humans by absorbing those less attached fragments of your soul. They slowly pick at your soul until there is next to nothing, and there is no need to feed because you don't feel hungry. And then you slowly fade... As for emotions? Well according to canon the less you have a soul the fewer emotions you feel. If Dementors' presence truly let you attain such state then it would explain why people under their influence tend to feel less complicated emotions (sadness, anger, etc. ).

Yeah, I meant Harry!crux, but I'm hesitant of mentioning it straightforward because I generally don't like to give too much credit to Rowling. She bullshits her way through too much for me to comfortably reference her. I'm pretty sure that the majority of that experience was Harry!crux, since even looking from distance at Dementors give Harry chills.

OMG, those are excellent and I had not read them before. Thank you! I'm going to have trouble not imagining Hermione as a bookie now. It's too perfect.

I bet Remus learned a lot of things in his Marauders days that would translate to the extermination business. They must have run into a lot of minor and not-so-minor creatures during all that sneaking around.

Hm, that might work. Maybe the Patronus/positive memories thing is more about pulling yourself together than happiness as such, then? Which might make sense given what Sirius says, that knowing he was innocent helped keep him sane even though it wasn't a happy thought. It was about knowing who he was and holding his soul together, or something like that. And he does seem a bit, um, lacking in emotional nuance once he's free. I think he was damaged before he went in, but having his soul nibbled around the edges surely makes it worse.

My absolute favourite copperbadge's work is Registration. It just fits pre-Pottemore HPverse world. Also Hermione-the-bookie fits OotP!Hermione

Honestly, it's longterm inmates that made question how Dementors work. If I remember correctly according to Jo Dementors were inspired by her struggle with depression, but each time we see on-screen characters under Dementor's influence they tend to act more like they experience a panic attack or anxiety attack than depression. Especially Harry.

Now everybody experiences mental disorders differently so I'm not going to suggest that she lied. She might be bad at communicating such things. Or perhaps she suffered from both depression and anxiety and simply mixed symptoms. BUT I experienced all 3 above and longterm exposure descriptions remind me way too much of this mix between depression and anxiety.

Now being constantly reminded of the worst moments in your life will leave you mentally scarred, no questions here, but none of the people who ended up in Azkaban is quite right. Sure one can say that DEs were already missing a few marbles before they ended there and Barty went nuts thanks to being constantly under mind-controlling spells, but what about people like Sirius? Or let's go even further and ask how well are Arthur and Hagrid?
Heck, I seem to recall Remus mentioning that hanging around Dementors for too long can render wizard permanently magicless. And we know that magic in HPverse IS connected to soul.

I think Patronus is two-part pulling yourself together so there are fewer bits to nibble on and one part actually shielding your soul from their influence.

Now I have to wonder how interacting with Dementors affected already damaged Tom's soul.
