Filling some gaps about the first war (part 7)

After Tom's downfall, the main action against his supporters was by the Ministry. (BTW the rumors must have started flying before morning. Who started them? Bathilda Bagshot? The Ministry clean-up team? Hagrid? Albus himself?) ( Read more... )

I really love those essays! I can see you've put a lot of work into this and it's such fun to read, so thanks!

Maybe Igor didn't mention Lucius or Bella because he'd been warned not to by Couch. He wouldn't want those two, or anyone else he cut a deal with, to be mentioned and he probably had a word with Igor before the hearing. It was so public that to me it almost looked like a show for the crowd (Bella's trial certainly was!), so I assume that there was a private "chat" between Igor and Crouch/other Ministry employee before. Otherwise, how did they even know that he wanted a hearing?

We know that the contents of Igor's hearing were not leaked to the general public, only the general idea (that he named fellow DEs) because Severus' history was not known. So I wouldn't call Igor's hearing public. If he had named Lucius the general public wouldn't have known either. Apparently members of the wizarding council can be very secretive. Crouch would have said that Lucius was 'proven' to have been under Imperius, poor fellow must have been forced to join the circle.

Ludo Bagman's trial was definitely public, we see Rita Skeeter present. The Quartet's trial was probably public because Sirius found out about its contents in detail years after the fact. But that was several months after Igor's hearing.

It almost looks like whether one was incarcerated or cleared depended on a calculus that considered the relative social and political standing of the accused and the victim: One's chances at getting cleared looked better if one came from a high-status, well connected family and the victim did not.

Unfortunately that is also true in real life.

Indeed. And Crouch was running the system, he was cutting the deals (as we see him do with Igor) so any claims that he had any principles are unfounded.

Perhaps the reason Moody is so suspicious of Snape is because he never had an opportunity to interrogate him! He's still sKeptical at Karkaroff's trial, so either he's never questioned Snape or Snape is already an excellent occlumens and didn't reveal anything.

I wonder who grassed on Snape in the first place for him to need a hearing? If Dumbledore were a proper 'Control' he would have seen to it that Snape was never suspected let alone arrested and put on trial. After all, he managed to get Black into Azkaban without a hearing of any kind.

As far as I'm concerned, it's just another example of JKR not giving enough thought to the details of her story! It's really hard to 'play the game' with HP -- it makes my head hurt.

Why would Moody not be suspicious of Severus? He can accept that Severus provided useful information (for example information that allowed Moody to capture Igor and kill Evan Rosier) while still being skeptical of his motivation.

How could Albus prevent any DE who might come forward spilling the beans about Severus? Neither Albus nor Severus knew who all the DEs were. There was a chance someone guessed Severus' identity without being smoked out by Severus. Better call the Ministry first.

And of course there were apparently years of rumors that he would be a DE amongst the Gryffindors he went to school with! The actual 'Marauders' weren't in a position to throw accusations at the time, but I'm sure they had convinced plenty of others long before Snape ever joined Voldy.

How many Slytherins became Death Eaters because they felt they had no other choice?
