For those of you who don't know, I live in an old farm house. It was built in the late 1800's just before the turn of the century. One such characteristic of a house this old is that sometimes there are still parts of the past lying around. There is one less piece of history at my house.
Back in the old days when there was no air conditioning nor any circulating fans, keeping the house cool in the summer was a bit of a challenge. One such idea of how to do this was to remove the oven from the house when the weather was warm. This way the heat from the oven cooking food was not making the house any warmer. Every spring/summer the owners of the farm house would take the oven out of the kitchen and put it in a small building behind the house called a summer kitchen. When my parents bought this house they converted the summer kitchen into an office for the company my dad started just after they bought the house. A few years later the office moved and the summer kitchen became basically a large, fancy storage shed. Time has taken it's tole on the summer kitchen and it was finally time for it to come down today. I realize that from a historical point of view keeping the summer kitchen would have been best, but it was beyond repair and we were afraid it was going to fall on someone.
The afternoon was full of demolition and fun. We made a very large mess and a ton of noise. It was fun, but now I am tired. Tomorrow dad will use the tractor to back blade where the summer kitchen was, then after the ground is prepped we will put 200 yards of sod down in the back yard to cover over the spot where the kitchen was and to cover the damage to the yard when dad started the new pond.
