So today was my first day at Fayetteville and Pope. We headed to base around 9am to go get my military ID. That didn't work out so well since, according to their system, I'm still a cadet and won't graduate until December 31, 2006! So I couldn't get my Active Duty ID, so I got an Air Force academy ID instead...ohwell. Then we headed to the Family Housing Services which was very helpfull. They gave us a map of Pope/Ft Bragg as well as the Fayetteville area. The lady who was helping me also highlighted areas where they tell new commers NOT to live because they are too dangerous or something. Apparently Fayetteville has two gangs who happen to be divided by a road...go figure. She also mentioned not to live in Downtown Fayetteville, apparently that's not safe either. I was also told that a lot of Air Force people live in Spring Lake which is a spring-up town outside of Pope (the only reason it's there is because of Pope) but then the lady at the housing office said that it's not a good idea to live in Spring Lake either (It didn't look too good when we drove by yesterday and today...). A lot of the areas didn't look to good either. They all look kind of run down and left a lone, which is kind of sad. After the Housing office I went to get the ranks for my BDU jacket and then I took my jackets to the dry cleaners to get pressed and then my ranks sewn on!
BUT I did find an awesome place that is off the main highway (It reminds me of that highway in Piscataway near Carrie's house where there is strip mall after strip mall) that's what this highway is like. It is tucked away behind a Target and a Best Buy in the woods. It looks very very nice...soooo much better then any place we've seen today (and we've seen upwards of 20 apartment complex's today). It's also at the same price range as some of the cheaper apartments I've seen (which means its still under my basic allowance for housing (so it's like I'm not even paying for it!). It's a two bedroom apartment which two bathrooms, a living room, a dining rooml, and a kitchen. (Here's a link to it www.chasonridge.com ). I haven't done anything yet, but unless I find another place that feels as safe and looks as good and as comfortable, I'll most likely put a down payment on this one apartment so that I can get it when I move here. It works out nicely too because it doesn't open up until July 27th which works well for me because I'll be moving to Pope on July 27th because I have to report on July 28th (It's like it's meant to be!) What's more..I can't wait for Carrie to see it!
Tomorrow is another day and I'll do a little more looking around and then contact the Chason Ridge Apartment people if I decide to get that apartment.
