How do we define things...revisited.

We define things through symbolic interactionism. (so the theory goes)

Symbolic Interactionist think that definitions and meanings change depending on the individual, but society as a whole has its own definitions and meanings (Think of it as the average definition and meaning).

Think of it as a bell curve. The tails are the abnormal > 2 SD's, and the +2,-2 standard deviations are the norm.

Next question:
If you define things in a way that is not the "normal way" (average way) of defining those same things, how do you cope? Do you in the end, just average out anyways, or do you remain outside of the normal range?
