The Discworld is a Matriarchial Society

[to family]

Since I don't think we're expecting any more new arrivals, I suggest we begin establishing some ground rules for us all to follow.  A tight ship is a happy ship.  For those of you less apt to picking up on this sort of thing, that's code for 'assigning chores', but there are other things that might bear discussing.  If we're going to ( Read more... )

[ She was about to buy some new dresses, but wow, okay, that works too. Unfortunately, ] I can see why a two-way transaction isn't necessary...

I think my drone is colorblind. Or otherwise mentally incapacitated.

If there is one thing I can be sure of, it's her inability to detect any incongruities in her choice of color schemes.

[ Kanaya actually loves color! But not when used like this... she holds out one of the brighter dresses to see how horrid they are. ] I do hope I never get droned.

It's really more a matter of 'I hope I get permanently droned before I get temporarily droned', but you can always hope.

[ Her eyes widen slightly. ] There's a difference? [ She folds the dress neatly and searches the sack for another. There has to be at least one decent piece of clothing in here... ]

[There really isn't. There's a five inch patch of black on one of them that might be salvageable, though.]

Yes.

One is temporary. The other is permanent.

[This is said rather slowly, as one would explain to a small child. Susan has too much experience with that.]

Maddening.

[ She'll take it. ]

Let me ask another question. Are there any prerequisites that must be met in order to meet such a consequence? Which leads to that which is transient, and that which is irreversible? I'm interested in the many ways one can subject himself to the delightful event of panscrubbing. [ Pause. ] Droning.

A much more sensible question. Droning occurs as punishment for doing something 'wrong'; this is almost always temporary. The permanent type almost never comes with any warning.

Something "wrong"? By what rules do we have to abide?

Don't skip school, don't fight in public, sleep in your own house, and you ought to be fine.

[ Huh... ] Are those tasks so difficult to accomplish that they've become a regular occurrence?

Not really. But not everyone knows, and not everyone remembers.

Okay.

I will be taking a few pieces of your drone's apparel. I remembered that yellow was a color I've been wanting to work with. [ She picks a few more pieces of clothing up. She can do something with this... Pause. ] I think red would be a good hue to add to your wardrobe.

Take as much as you'd like. No returns.

[It takes her a moment to realize Kanaya is speaking on a personal level.]

What? What do you mean?

You have an aversion to color, but I am of the opinion you can work with a wider spectrum of shades just as well. Have you ever seen the berries humans slice and scatter top of circular bread covered in curd of milk from musclebeasts for consumption? True reds such as that suit your complexion and fair hair, I do believe so.

[Susan will simply stare at the girl for some time, rather at a loss of words. A rare occurrence.]

I think you're talking about cheese, but I don't think berries are usually associated with cheese, so I'm at a bit of a loss.

Thank you, though.
