Wow. This is an awesome and painful fill to that prompt. ♥

I can't write fluff in THG. Apparently. Ever. :P

Finnick would be appalled to know that he had any part in hurting her like this, the poor, clueless man, even as he'd probably understand it (and Annie certainly would) if he stepped back and looked at it rationally.

There's a reason Haymitch said "Set some ground rules", and he's probably kicking his own ass for not being more specific of "And figure out exactly what you two have going." (Since obviously in his case, Chantilly was very up-front about it.)

But you get two scared, traumatized teenagers together and they come to rely on each other with a close friendship with a sexual aspect to it...the difference is that Finnick managed to find something real and see the difference. So after that point there was probably an awkward period and then deciding yeah, their friendship was important enough to survive Annie's role in it and the loss of the sex.

I do think Annie would probably see Johanna's side more easily than Finnick would. Men. ;)

I love this. Just a subtle acknowledgement that the sarcasm is a bit of armor they both put on when they need it to protect themselves.

It really is. And you saw with some of my later prompts they've gotten comfortable enough to tease each other a bit, but that's the sort of banter that draws the other person in rather than shuts them out.

In Jo's defense, it must have been almost impossible not to fall in love with Finnick in that situation. I mean, he's a sweet, caring guy and obviously feeling attracted to her. What else could you ask for? Finnick had other options available, while she was on her own.

Oh, totally agreed and that's my read on it too. She's essentially alone. Her family was murdered, and of the two other living Seven victors, Cedrus is polite but gruff plus he's forty years older than her and Blight is twenty years older and can't deal well with the Games and the prostitution and so he's somewhat unreliable. Haymitch is reliable for advice but in terms of direct comfort he's making sure to keep her at an emotional distance because a.) he doesn't want to be that asshole who takes advantage of a vulnerable teen girl and b.) he really just doesn't want anything close enough to hurt anyway. She's lost what friends she had because they don't know what to make of her post-arena. So someone kind and understanding like Finnick who's there for her 100% as a friend and a lover? It's natural to fall in love with him.

Finnick, in contrast, had his own family at home, probably some friends, Mags and numerous other Four victors, etc. So he had a reliable network to lean on to help keep him steady in addition to friendship with Johanna. Johanna wasn't his everything the way he was hers and that's a big difference.
