I think need to whisk out that anime again and forget about Rurouni Kenshin (classic anime is way out of date) because the ending literally made me cry. The story is reinvented from Peace Maker Kurogane, the focus being the female main character, Yukimura Chizuru but Saitou Hajime wasn't written in the PMK version the more accurate historical accounts. Saitou Hajime just single handedly carried Chizuru away like a sack of potatoes, where he just grabbed her by her arm and whisked off her feet? Almost sounds like a fairy tail, but it's entirely different by his actions.
How should I put it because in reality it happens? Regardless of the past...
How a man should really treat a girl (woman) and a kid... Then they finally discover that she's a girl (JP-CH: 女子, Onna no Ko), but it is because she is also a boy. Japan history really have change and evolved well from Kabuki, where something of Tarazuka Company exist with an all female entourage play male roles.
