Personality: Firstly, I've got to say this, because it's going to be a running theme throughout this section - Dave is not a Responsible Adult. By the age of 13, Badou was more responsible than Dave was, making sure to pay the bills on time (or... by the final notice, at least) while Dave would often forget to. Dave couldn't cook for shit, aside from stuff out of a can, while Badou taught himself how to cook food that was both edible and actually tasted like food. Dave would wear ripped shirts and jeans until Badou taught himself how to sew. Dave could take care of himself in the most basic of ways, and never struggled to do anything but that. Badou was the one who took care of business, for the most part. More than anything, Dave was a dreamer. He was always thinking about the big busts and how to live his life in a hard boiled way - in one of Badou's flashbacks, he basically says that life is one big party, and you should blow it all out in one big bang. Dave was a risk-taker, but he lacked something a lot of risk-takers tend to have - self-preservation.
Dave was also a pretty friendly guy, in a superficial sort of way. He'll pal around with you and listen to your troubles, and even offer to lend you a hand with some sticky situations, but for him, most relationships never really go further than skip deep. He was the type to crack jokes and laugh at the littlest of things, and it wouldn't be strange for him to dub you with a weird nickname. Badou got tons of those, from “Bad Boy” to “Kiddo” to “Shit Eater”. While Dave was outwardly friendly and engaging, he also rarely ever spoke of himself to anyone else, or shared any of his own personal information. Sure, he might tell you that he has a brother if you ask, but chances are he won't mention his name. Real emotional attachments are a strange thing for Dave, and are few and far in between. But yeah, if you want a pal, Dave's the guy!
Back to that whole Not a Responsible Adult thing - Dave lived in the moment. He and Badou lived from paycheck to paycheck, and from job to job. The here and the now were what were usually on his mind, occasionally the 'A Little While From Now' showed up, but there was no sense of Long Run for Dave. He also tends to overlook the consequences of his actions, or the fact that there can be consequences for the things he does. One admirable quality about Dave was that he wasn't much of a complainer - sure, he might mention his discontent with the underground or how his jobs were going - but he never really complained about them. He had a heavy work ethic, always was looking for something new to do and to look up. Sure, it was only so heavy because it interested him, but he had passion for something outside of smokes and booze.
