It begins with a challenge; a dare of sorts. Knowing full-well it will goad her into proving him wrong, Friedrich makes an off-hand comment about women and their lack of throwing ability and aim.
She takes the bait, throws down the gauntlet, and ten minutes later finds them sneaking into the kitchens, coming away with a basket of rotten fruit due for the stocks, and lobbing the gooey messes off the topmost tower onto the heads of the unfortunate guards below.
His next challenge is more ambitious, not to mention dangerous if they are caught, but it is worth the thrill and the hammering hearts to hear the Sheriff’s holler when he wakes the next morning, his chambers draped floor to ceiling with webs of honey-covered twine.
Robin is bemused to find the bounty on his head increased by a substantial amount, but thoroughly amused to hear of the spiders released into the Sheriff’s bath, the accidental case of woodworm that causes a Black Knight to fall through the stairs in the Great Hall, the replacement of sugar on the guards’ morning porridge with salt.
It’s only a bit of fun, of course, but for Marian, still under house arrest despite what appearances may seem for the Count’s stay, revels in the slight rebellion their antics give her.
