Righto, I had better do a serious post about why I would like to do this LJ board thing.

LONG VERSION:
( short version for the tl;dr posse HERE)

I'll base this off the recommended topics to cover, as they seem like a good place to start.

That's just about perfect. I suggest you call that your MANIFESTO and openly invite everyone who possibly can to steal ideas from it, blatantly. (This will also save you from having to be sober for meetings.)

i'm runnin' against you, Mr. Deathboy, but I gotta say I'm w/ ya on pretty much all of this. I like being able to push "play" on Youtubes right on my eff page, but th option to have placeholders for th "rich" stuff seems like a pretty good idea--th idea is to speed shit up, right? I'm also bummed out about people going away from el jay in favour of th sexier alternatives because it really doesn't matter if I love it so much here if all th good people are leaving! All right, see you t'morrow

hey, dude, thanks for the good words :)

it actually looks like the option for placeholders for videos does work for all rich content, I think they maybe wrote all their documentation when the only stuff they let you embed was youtube videos, but now it applies to all sorts of flash widgets. either way, it's a good option if you're at work or on dialup.

I get a bit depressed about the 'sexier' alternatives, too ;) 'sexier' seems to mean "the ability to spam your mates about becoming a zombie while playing six crappy music videos at once", can't believe people eat that stuff up.

Liking all your points. You've got my vote.

I was going to vote for you because you're a friend, but now I'm going to vote for you *because you're right*.

Best of both worlds, really :)

I've double-checked my facts, and the situation seems to beeeee:

Content should not auto-play, but sometimes stuff slips through. If this happens, users should raise a support issue and it'll be investigated.

The option in journal settings to replace videos with placeholders seems to apply to all rich content (so, flash-players that play mp3s should be folded away, too).

This should reliably prevent you from seeing any kind of flash content, so if something that auto-plays got through, this would stop it. not necessarily perfect for at-home browsing, but ideal for work.
